My dear friends,
I greatly appreciate your birthday wishes.  Since this is my 80th, I decided to do something special and celebrate in London.  The first time my parents took me to Europe, I celebrated my 16th birthday there, and I tried to duplicate that experience.  I had dinner at The Ivy, a very popular restaurant in the West End, and again attended a performance of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, London's longest running play.  Before I began my celebration,  I raised my glass in a silent toast to absent friends and family.
Thank you again for remembering me.
   God bless you all,

Dean Pope and his wife Liz were great lovers of London theater.

Dean, did you ever see The Mousetrap?

In my year at Cambridge I made several trips the old Ivy, a favorite haunt of Churchill, who during WWII protected the Italian family who then  owned it from anti Italian sentiment  not surprisingly found In London. And in our short trip to London before moving to Richmond in December 1973, Liz and I attended The Mousetrap, not a great play but lots of fun.   The current British government may be the most bungling ever, but Dr. Johnson was correct: he who is tired of London is tired of life.

Tina and Dean, I respectfully disagree. Whenever I go to England I want to get the hell out of London as fast as possible. To me the real England is the Cotswolds and the Devonshire moors. That’s why I liked Tasmania so much. The more trees and the fewer people the better I like it.

Julie that sounded like a great way to celebrate your 80th birthday! I know London is a treat, a very iconic and unique place to visit. So happy you had a special celebration for this new decade most of us are now negotiating our l lives in the reality of being octogenarians!!  ( Yet still stuck at times in the great music of our youth- great memories! ) Enjoy your life! God bless you with health and safety as you travel. LY Karen

My daughter who was injured at school the last week at school and  is still home recuperating from several injuries. The county transferred her to an elem position with a board sub. Still not sure when she will go back
I’m in Mt Pleasant SC until Oct 8th to take a mental and spiritual break. I’ve got writings and paintings to do along with plenty of reading to finish! We have a new babe (great) coming in Oct and a wedding in May ‘26 we are excited to see! Take care. 😉😍K

Dear Julie, I must say your 80th celebration sounds like a WONDERFUL time.  I didn't do much except go out for dinner.  I did, however, recently get a prize-winning card for my 80th birthday which was actually in May.  But we are all turning 80 this year, so here's the net of that card to everyone:
Imagine a red wooden heart about the size of a quarter next to the large number 80.
Below that are actual Scrabble tiles spelling: E I G H T Y.
Below that is this line of information:
EIGHTY is only 13 in Scrabble.
Happy 80th to Julie and all of our class.  Note: we will all be worth less in Scrabble when (if) we reach 90!  And aren't you glad you're not 13?
May you all enjoy a wonderful decade!
Susan Grafton Alexander  ( I include my middle name because many of you may not recognize me otherwise.)
PS... maybe for my 80th birthday, I am treating myself to golf lessons, as I am in a senior residence with free access (and the use of a golf cart) Mondays-Thursdays to a beautiful 9-hole course with waterfalls and some pretty intimidating hazards.  I'm terrible, but I'm anxious to see if -- as all the experts advise -- I can learn something new and hard this late in life. I've had 6 lessons so far...  And the only new trick I've mastered is taking advantage of my status as a beginning golfer:  Sure, throw your ball back on the fairway.  Tee up every shot. Don't keep score.   Skip the 9th hole entirely, since you have to shoot from the tee over a lake to land on a small putting green almost totally surrounded by water.  Heck, skip any hole where you might land in water.  After your more experienced golfing friends have lost a ball or two on the 9th hole, enjoy a beer and  a hotdog for the very reasonable price of $5.  If you play by these guidelines, it's not that different from Scrabble!

Susan - I love your rules for golf. We live on a golf course. And I have clubs. I might make a cheat sheet with your rules and announce to Chris that I am joining him and playing by Susan's Sheet. Sounds as if you are rocking 80! Or, thirteen!

Julie - Your reminiscence of your first trip to London was enchanting. Thank you for sharing your memories and reliving them. And you too are rocking 80!

Eighty is just a few days away for me. I shall lift my glass to Memphis friends and memories. A special thanks to the Cubs 63 group and the thoughts you share and the fun reminders from each of you. We have shared so much over the years - I am grateful for each of you as well as those who live in our memories.

 Here's to 81!

Cheers, Tina

Susan and Tina, Golf is a game against oneself.  If one tries too hard to do well or perfect a shot, one will fail.  It is only the very relaxed person who wins.  My father’s rule is “Don’t take practice shots.”  It only wears you out and makes everyone frown.  Warm up before you get to the first hole.

Julie and Paul have the right idea…travel to new or old places and eat good food.

I am making placemats for Meals on Wheels.  I follow my father’s gold rules to not worry about perfection and its works out better for the placemat.

Love to hear about the trips.  We are working on 81 now, so cheers to that.  Margo

Tina, those rules were suggested by another woman who lives here, and I am sure she would be glad to know that might make another senior golfer enjoy the game!
Julie, I believe at 81, the Scrabble age will be sweet 16!  But if 81 requires a hyphen, it might not be allowed!!!

Margo, your dad's rules are great for someone who has played for years.  It's impossible to relax (well, little kids seem to do ok at it) when taking lessons!  But, I agree, my good friend
Greg likes to warm up before the first hole, has played for about 65 years, and looks like he's totally relaxed.  And he's very good.
When I relax I miss the ball completely! Maybe after lesson 7 I will catch on.

Here is the secret….don’t tell anyone I told you.   NEVER,Never, never, take your eyes off the ball…..Even if it means you cannot bring the club all the way back, learn to keep your eyes on the ball.  You will loosen your back swing as you play, but if you raise your head, you will miss the ball. Your body knows how to swing.  I bet you have a gene pool that used a scycle.  It is the same motion that you might use in the beginning.  Don’t worry about bring the club all the way back, that is a development that happens naturally.  Just chop wheat.

I am sure you will be fine if you just remember to keep you head down and focus on the ball.  Such a little thing, but I have faith that you can really focus.  After all you went to law school at an advanced age.

In any case, I hope you both (Susan and Tina) have fun and really enjoy the game.
