Hi  Paul,
I would say that it is pretty much like the English speaking world.  The pronunciation, vocabulary, etc. may be somewhat different, but basic understanding should be the same.  Spain has an academy that  tries to maintain the purity of the language but other Spanish speaking countries are not required to follow it.  The purity of the language is related to the conquest.  Mexico and Peru are more pure than Argentina, for example.  Argentina was not a stronghold of the Spanish empire in the New World.  It was also influenced by the waves of Italians who relocated over the years.  I have lived in both Peru and Argentina.  The first  few weeks of my residence in Argentina I had to adjust to different commands  and the familiar form of address (tu/vos).  I have been in all the South American countries except Paraguay  and all the Central American countries except Nicaragua and El Salvador.

With regard to English, I would like to note an exception to what I have said.  I have also traveled to most English speaking countries as well and have gotten along fine.  Now that I am going more frequently to Scotland, however, I have had an occasional communication problem.

Great to hear from you,
Julie

Thanks, Julie, that’s interesting. A girl from Columbia was a fellow grad student at Cornell, and she always claimed they spoke good Spanish. It was certainly slower than what I hear when Mexicans talk. My grandniece and nephew Lucy and Sam Erickson went to Spanish-intensive high schools in Oregon, and my sister claims that Sam speaks better Spanish than most natives. He’s going to engineering school at Oregon State now so he may get rusty. What are you up to these days?
