LUCILLE WALLIS

Lucille Wallis died February 12, 2015, in Memphis, Tennessee. She was 96 years old. Having attended Murray State University as an undergraduate, Lucille earned her Master of Arts in Education from Memphis College in 1960. A life-long teacher, she taught first and second grade most of her career. She taught in Springfield, Tennessee and in Memphis at Sharpe Elementary and the Memphis State Campus School. Some of her favorite interests were raising plants, completing crossword puzzles, cooking delectable meals and keeping up with the Memphis Tigers teams with her cat Zoe. Lucille was a devoted member of the Baptist faith, attending Prescott Baptist Church in her early years in Memphis and Balmoral Baptist Church in more recent times. Lucille was a native of Fulton County, Kentucky. She is preceded in death by her husband of forty-three years, Hugh Hawthorne Wallis; her daughter, Vivian Wallis Hogue; her parents, William B. and Frances “Pinkie” Shuck McGehee; and her two sisters, Frances Churchill and Marjorie Call. Lucille is survived by her daughter, Sandra Wallis Aiken (Charles); three grandchildren, Jennifer Dickson (Jim), Michael Aiken (Sarah), and Bryan Hogue; and three great-grandchildren, James Dickson, Kathryn Dickson, and Lachlan Aiken. I really did like Hawthorne Wallis.  Valentines Day 2015.  Watching a little light snow come down in my favorite room with a little bit of Bourbon. and Pebble Beach on the TV.  !0 windows and a glass door looking out my back yard.  We expect 1-3 inches, if the latter I'll use my blower for the second time this year.  All the snow went north of us (so far, knock on wood).  But we got an arctic blast coming tomorrow - wind chills in the minuses.  Cooking red beans, which I'll save for Fat Tuesday.  Hope you all have a Happy Valentines Day and a fun Mardi Gras.

Hi Gene .....

We're expecting a bit more snow (It's been snowing here for the past couple of hours) but nothing like what they're predicting for farther north east of us.  We've still got plenty on the ground from the previous snows.  Just not warm enough to melt anything yet.  Nowhere near seeing any early spring flowers popping out of the ground.  Was talking to my sister in Texas today .... she had been out mowing the grass.  It'll be awhile before we see anything like grass!

I have one daffodill that I can se a bit of yellow on it.  That's why they call it SOUTH Jersey.  I talked to my cousin today.  He remembers Campbell Kensinger quite well.  Definitely not as tough as the Tillery Brother and Drake their cousin.  Drake was killed in the Penitentiary.  Two inmates with aluminum bats.  Jim said he was smart - used t make the highest grades in his classes at Memphis.  Campbell  started dealing from a "safe" house.  He carried a sword and used to poke people with it.  Some of his gang got tired of him and shot him to death.  Kensinger's father had tons of money.  Built the concrete tower on Union.  Poured concrete not blocks - in Ripley as the only one in the world.  Campbel's younger brother - Jimmy - a year ahead of us at Training has several cat dealerships in New Orleans.

Thanks Robert for the news and always good to hear from Gene & Jean.
Like Gene Hawthorne was my favorite teacher at Training. On about my second day in his class I was busy writing a note to a young lady who shall go unnamed, when he eased up beside me unnoticed and promptly whacked me across the knuckles with a yardstick. Oh that hurt!!! He got my attention & I never risked that again, even for true love.
He was an interesting & enjoyable teacher in my book. Remember when he put us through that thing where a projector showed a story via speed reading & they tested us to see how much we got? (I'm sure that was a Memphis College experiment.)
It was 62 this beautiful & sunny Sat! However, my old fraternity brother, Dave Brown, mostly retired Channel 5, NBC, weatherman, tells me it is going to drop like a rock tomorrow & those poor souls who still commute will be looking at ice & 2-4" of ice/snow for the Mon morning commute. When I wake up, I'll have to check NBC to see how the Memphians are faring.

Do you remember the movies Mr. Wallis showed us?  Silent movies.  I remember the one about the Boston Tea Party.  He was a good teacher.  I got the German measles in the 7th grade class.  He looked at me and told me to go home.

Weather in SC is what you would expect.  One day it is warm and sunny and the next cold and wet.  Daffys are blooming everywhere and I expect the early trees to bloom soon. Our roads are bad from neglect not ice and snow.

“Number from one to twenty, skipping a line between 5, 10, and 15”.

Does anyone else remember that?

Two vivid memories from Mr. Wallis’ class:

(1)    The day we had been doing a lot of sit-ups in gym, and Gene Fulghum sitting to my left, could not control his laughter when it started.  His tummy muscles kept contracting.  Then I started.  The only time I remember laughing hard in a class.

(2)    Lloyd Thompson as Mr. Wallis’ favorite foil.  Question from Mr. Wallis to Lloyd, “Lloyd, I see there are chicken cars on railroads these days.  I wonder what they look like?”  Lloyd’s reply, “They look just like box cars, except they have windows for the chickens to look out of.”  For some reason that really cracked me up.

42 degrees yesterday afternoon.  Then a strong wind came through about dark and the temp plunged to 11 last night.

Possibility of snow Mon eve through Wed morn.

Sunny today, though.  I can stand the cold as long as it’s sunny.

I remembered the other dialogue I enjoyed between Mr. Wallis and Lloyd.

Mr. Wallis, while discussing vitamins and their sources:

“Lloyd, I wonder how the people in Canada get their vitamin C?”  [“Correct” answer = from cod liver oil].

Lloyd’s reply, “From frozen orange juice produced by frozen orange trees.  The harvesters use hockey sticks to knock the frozen oranges off the frozen orange trees.”

I remember the sit-ups - I,m sure Robert does as well.  We were all trying to outdo each other, and at basketball practice we were so sore, we could barely move, but laughter killed us.  I have to say my favorite teacher was my Dad, but not the best teacher.  David was the Messick group on the email when we spoke of Ms. Peeler (also known as the wicked witch of the South.)

Oh, what I would give for a field of daffodils right now!  The attached photo is from one of the "blizzards" in January.  Problem is that we've had such constant below freezing temps, we haven't thawed enough in between snowfalls.  We're down to about 14" or so still on the ground.  We just got back from dinner and I sprinted into the apartment!  It's about 11 degrees, feels like -1.   And, Margo, I never got used to the cold.  I have always loved the New York area for the "City", the entertainment, the variety, the pace, the foods, the geography ..... but never the COLD!

I do remember those movies and all the "speed reading" they had us doing.  I think I just thought everyone did that.  Didn't dawn on me that they were experimenting on us.  In fact, as an adult, I wondered if I had imagined it.  Good to know that everyone else remembers it too!  And I too remember calling him "Froggie" ..... not terribly nice of us ..... but he had those great big eyes!  He was one of my favorite teachers too.

Gene, I think Mike DeZonia & Mike Murphy have been on for a while; as you know I just got back on, thanks to Paul. Not sure who else of our Messick crowd is on.
I missed Ms Peeler - ohhhhhhh - that sends a chill.
David Madison got in trouble with her for something & she wrote David M on the board to stay after school for punishment. Come 3:00 she made me stay. I tried to explain it was Madison & not me, but she wouldn't hear of it.
Madison walked out grinning at me. Told my Mom about it & bless her heart she went up there and had a "chat" with Mrs Peeler.
On a much cheerier note, does anyone remember "Radio Station WARR?"
Mack Warr's Mom & my 5th grade teacher. What a fantastic lady. Different kids were the "hosts" on the Fri aft "radio show" & brought treats for the class. Never will forget Dick Dorsey bringing his Mom's "Chinese Chewies"
I would give $20 bucks for one of those today just to taste one again!
Mrs Warr was fantastic & then gosh, ran into Mrs Peeler in 6th Gr. Talk about both ends of the spectrum.

I lived one winter in New Jersey.  I lived across the street from the Rahway River which iced over enough so that people walked on it.  I walked my border collie on it after getting cabin fever.  The cold was awful, but to me the problem was that it got dark so early.  In SC our short winter days are probably about 10 hours long, but now the days are from 7:00AM to 6:00PM.  Even if it is cold, the sun is out.
I have a recipe somewhere for Chinese Chewies in an old Memphis cookbook.

A lot of us have Peeler stories.  She told me that I lacked the "Milk of Human Kindness"  - which when she did Barry Johnson and/or Wayne Crook would say, under their breath, "she certainly has enough milk for us all" - Margo left Training for a year to avoid being in her class, and Mike Hines missed out on the safety counsel's trip to the lake in Mississippi, because he missed a day of safety patrol, when his mother kept him home with a fever. He hated her for that.  Didn't find out until my adult years that my Mom and her were friends and traded recipes.

Mrs. Warr was great, I remember doing "Dragnet" on it, and Dorsey's "Chinese Chewies" were wonderful, but I can't even remember what they tasted like.  I seem to remember peanut butter and coconut.  If you still have a copy of our class's Training annual, "Chinese Chewies" were still being talked about.

It was too cold this morning, - 4 degrees, to walk, so I stayed in bed.  Dave McComas and I would love Chinese Chewies recipe if you can find it.  Too cold up here for Carann, but, my body regulates temperature very well.  Friday was not fun, with the wind blowing the snow from the snow bower back in my face, and, even with two gloves on, my fingers just missing getting frostbite.

You can get almost anything off the internet now.  From Cook's Country (County?):

Chinese Chewies

1 box brown sugar
1 1/2 c. self-rising flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped walnuts
1/2 c. butter
3 eggs
Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs, then flour and vanilla. Beat until smooth, stir in nuts. Bake in a greased 13 x 9 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Let set about 5 minutes, then cut into squares.

The recipe that I have comes from the Frayser Chapter No. 409 Order of the Eastern Star. Memphis, 1976.

3/4 cup sifted flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup of chopped dates
1 cup chopped pecans
3 well-beaten eggs
Vanilla

Stir together the dry ingredients.  Stir in the well beaten eggs and vanilla.  Then add the dates and nuts and stir again.  Pour into a well greased 10x14x1 in pan.  Bake in a slow 300 degree oven for 30 minutes.  Cookies should be chewy.

I used to make these when I had to take cookies somewhere.  They were fabulous.

Margo, Did this come from a recipe book that you have? Frayser Chapter no longer exists. It merged with Memphis Chapter #62 and the with Mizpah Chapter to which my wife and I belong. The ladies would love to see the recipe book sometime if you are back in Memphis.
