My apologies for being so unresponsive.  I had 27 of my daughter-in-law’s relatives for Thanksgiving and Friday dinner, and I am still recovering. But it was a wonderful event and I am really glad I did it.  Large thanksgiving gatherings are a traditional in her family and it was clearly my time to step up.  And only 11 actually spent the night at my house. I could not have done it without the help of Maria and Justin. The group included two psychiatrists, two ministers, two former missionaries, a top airline executive, a woman in the space program, a physicist, a gaggle of lawyers and a delightful young woman, a junior at Vanderbilt who spends her summers training with the Marine Corps. All the Democrats are embarrassed by their party and almost all of the Republicans are embarrassed by their party.

So let me wish everyone now a Merry Christmas.

I still have the brick, Raymond!

The U of Memphis has started another teacher training school. I’m not sure where it’s located but here’s the website:

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Cubs and Cub Adoptees.

Robert, Paul and I went through the campus when they were just about done with demolishing the Training School. Paul climbed through the Crime Scene tape and gathered bricks for each of us.

The Junior High had been gone for years to make way for the new Student Center; the Elementary School was last to go.

Gayle and I had walked through it some time earlier, the tiny bathroom fixtures we used as little kids were still there, though the building had been repurposed several times over the years. I know ROTC offices had been in there, and I think Graphic Arts was in there for a while.

It really brought back good memories.

Susan,

We were on the Univ of MEM campus this afternoon (Nov 25).  Son Neil and I walked around the area where old Training School was.  There were no signs of the old school.  Lots of newer buildings.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Does anyone know if all or part of the building we called Training School still is being used? (I didn't read all of the attached links.)

Dave McComas: Here is incredible news I wanted to share with my fellow Cubs:

In April 2024 the Tennessee General Assembly made by law th University of Memphis able to run its own public school system.  The schools will be able to have students from Pre-K to 12thgrade. The following article was in the April 24, 2024 Commercial-Appeal:

Currently, the K-12 schools run by the University of Memphis are part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. But this is set to change. On Wednesday, the Innovative School District Act passed in the Tennessee General Assembly ― and it will allow U of M to operate its own local educational agency.

In other words, U of M will be running a separate school district. The governor has yet to sign the bill into law, but he isn't expected to veto it.

“While this is certainly a new concept for our state, being innovators in public education is not new to the University of Memphis,” said Sally Parish, associate VP for educational initiatives at U of M, in a press release. “We have always been trailblazers in education, and this opportunity is truly a testament to that.”

U of M's school system is referred to as University Schools, and it serves preschoolers through twelfth graders. It partners with Porter-Leath to operate an early childhood academy in the Orange Mound area, runs the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning and Research Center, and has three schools on its campus: Campus School, University Middle School, and University High School.

The University Schools locations are training and laboratory schools ― which means they also serve as training sites for prospective teachers ― and they have performed well. In the 2022-23 academic year, University Schools had the highest overall pass rate of any school system in the state. Campus School, University Middle, and University High earned “A” letter grades from the Tennessee Department of Education.

Spurred by the schools’ strong performances, State Sen. Brent Taylor and State Rep. Mark White proposed the Innovative School District Act in the Tennessee General Assembly, which will allow U of M to operate its own school district and expand the University Schools model.

Per the legislation, U of M will operate an "Innovative School District," and be the first to do so in the state.

Already, University Schools has its own policies and procedures, employs its own teachers and staff, provides its own classroom facilities, and operates under the oversight of U of M's board of trustees. But its contract with MSCS caps the number of students it can serve at 1,050. Once it’s a separate school district, it can start to expand.

It’s expected to do this for three years, and the expansion is set to come through a slow-growth, community-informed model that addresses enrollment demands. Last month, Parish told Chalkbeat Tennessee that University Schools had “more children on our waitlist than we have in our schools.” (https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/news/education/2024/03/13/university-of-memphis-could-become-its-own-k-12-school-district-new-tennessee-legislation/72945749007/)

But now that it’s a separate school district, how will University School’s function?

It will follow state standards, just like any other school district. The U of M Board of Trustees will serve as its board of education, and some of its members will be appointed to a committee that carries out the functions of a local school board.

The following brief article was in the August 8, 2025 Commercial-Appeal:

This year, the first high school class from University Schools (https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/news/education/2025/07/16/university-of-memphis-innovative-school-district-test-scores/84542283007/) will graduate, and for the first time in the school's 113-year history, a new elementary school (https://www.yahoo.com/news/university-schools-set-open-k-201946320.html) has opened.

The Campus School Kimball, a kindergarten through fifth-grade elementary school, opened its doors on Aug. 6 to the first students. The school is a part of the University Schools system, a now public K-12 school district (https://www.yahoo.com/news/university-memphis-gets-greenlight-tn-205051948.html) run out of the University of Memphis.

I feel very fortunate Raymond!!!! The calendar verifies I turned 80 today, but I spent the whole day with a huge group of Oxford friends. As it turned out Ole Miss held a ceremony celebrating 80+ students graduating as Registered Nurses.  My Granddaughter, Evan Montgomery was one of them and was one of the members who delivered a speech on behalf of the class.

Her Mom, Ashlea Montgomery had graduated from Nursing School and had a wonderful career as an RN! She passed the torch to Evan years ago & sweet Evan spoke before the auditorium with words on behalf of the class. Lots of celebration after the ceremony….just now getting to my home in Oxford. A wonderful day for our very proud family.  So it was a day of turning the clock to the big 80 yes, but what a  great day of celebration!

Wow, that was a great group of people, and I’m sure there were some very interesting and deep conversations. What a tremendous undertaking! I’m sure it was a strain to coordinate all of the food and housing, but many memories for all! Glad you had some help… can’t imagine doing all of that at our age!
