Android based NAS sounds wrong... but building it using usb2.0 storage
sounds even worse... to me at least.

I wouldn't use Android for a server of any sort, but there's a few Linux ports already which would be better suited, though harder to set-up for someone who's completely green to the world of UNIX and UNIX-like systems.

Looks like a good plan, but why do you want Android in a NAS? Life is
much easier if you go with a GNU/Linux distribution.

Instead of the USB->SATA bridges you may want to look into using an SATA
storage processor. But maybe these is a bit too expensive.

I have a 2 disk sata/usb raid1/0 cabinet, this could work with the cubie.  Thecus makes the one I have, but I'm sure the controller inside it is available on its own too.  It handles the raid on its own, the host system just sees a single sata disk.

Has anyone written up how to set up a cubieboard NAS with SATA, or got a suitable (Linux) image?

I'd love to get a cubie for this & maybe offline downloading. I have a little bit of Linux experience, but I'd be much happier following a known-working step by step (eg idiots' :p) guide :) Couldn't google one up...

Install a debian based fs, add the sata module, then openmediavault is quite nice.

They have armhf packages.

#~~~~~~OMV_ARMel~~~~~~~~#
deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public omnius main

apt-get update
apt-get install openmediavault

-----

第一 :

安装Debian.
需要一个img问我。我会做。。

/etc/modules
加:

#For SATA Support
sw_ahci_platform

第二 :

pico /etc/apt/sources.list

加:
#~~~~~~OMV_ARMel~~~~~~~~#
deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public omnius main

第三:
apt-get update
apt-get install openmediavault

There are many installation guides on linux-sunxi.org.

http://linux-sunxi.org/Category:Tutorial

Once you install Linux you can follow any guide for using Linux as NAS.

Depending on your needs you can pick Samba/AFS/iSCSI/...
