My machine is running v1.02, but the display says v1.03 is available.  How does it know that?

Has anyone tried to upgrade?  I tried to do it following the instructions in the User Guide, but it didn't work.  My screen just went blank
at the step where you're supposed to hold the 2 buttons down together (the Update soft button and the + hard button).

THere's no way to update the software... You literally have to uninstall version 1.02 and download and install version 1.03

Cubify is not terribly user friendly

are you talking about the software that creates the build files?  or the firmware on the CubeX machine itself?
I always see this after every print....

I never know what to do with it.....
it makes no sense that the current version is more advanced than what's available!!

I finally got the message a newer firmware is available - 1.05 - but I can't get it into boot loader mode either.
I navigate to firmware option, press both the upgrade firmware and select button - it just turns off like I only pressed the select button.
Have you had any luck with the update?

Hi Peter,
I talked to Cubify Support yesterday and the instructions about how to press the buttons, as listed in the User Guide are wrong.  The way you have to do it is you first scroll the menu over to the far right so that you see the icon labeled "Update".  Now ... press down the "+" hard key (the Function hard key).  As you're holding that down, tap the icon with your other finger.  Then it works.  By "works" I mean that you don't end up with a blank screen.

From there, the touchscreen display says something about wanting you to select the checkmark, but to do that while holding down the "+" hard key.  So I did that, and then I got the touchscreen message to announce:

BFB USB Bootloader V4 (as shown in Fig. 82 of the User Guide)

So ... this is all to say that I got beyond the blank-screen problem.  However, I ran into the next problem.  I never got to Fig. 88 of the User Guide.  When I plugged in the USB cable between my laptop and the CubeX, my Win7 gave an error (see attached) that it couldn't recognize the USB device (and so of course, the CubeX software Firmware Update icon selection also gave an error).  That's where I am right now.

BTW, I was wondering how the CubeX machine can give a message saying that an update is available.  For instance, my CubeX says that it's currently running v1.02, but that v1.03 is available.  You know how it knows that (I mean, there's no WiFi on the machine) ... it gets the information through the Build process.  When you run Build in the CubeX software, the CubeX software on your laptop has checked the Cubify website and knows what's available and it writes that information into the Build, so that when you save out as a .cubex file and transfer to the CubeX machine via the thumb drive ... the CubeX gets the update-available info from the .cubex file.

That's what I found out when I talked to Cubify Support yesterday.

I got it to successfully update the firmware.
I'm running a MAC mini with vmware running windows XP.
I navigated to the firmware update, held the "+" key and tapped the firmware update area and I got the confirmation screen.
I confirmed while holding the "+" button and the screen went blank - no further messages.
I started the Cubex windows application.
I plugged the Cubex into my MAC and directed the USB device to Windows.
It detected the device, said it installed it & I declined the reboot.
I tried the Firmware update button from the Windows Cubex application and it let me select the firmware to load and successfully loaded it.
I then had to turn off the Cubex and re-start it.
It made me re-activate it.
After that, it was ready to go.

Yep, I got past my error with the CubeX not recognizing the USB, and eventually got my firmware updated from v1.02 to v1.05.  I think, if I understood correctly, that the Cubify Support guy said one of the fixes is that the CubeX should no longer "subtract" too much in its algorithm.  My impression was it just times how long the nozzle is on and tries to dead-reckon how much filament should be left in your cartridge.

I'm still on V1.04 i'm unsure whether to update the firmware to V.05.
Any thoughts?

I would update to the latest. They say they fixed a lot of things from 1.4 to 1.5.
I have 1.5 on mine and it works well.

i agree with peter,
that many improvements have been installed in v1.05 -- but for now i would NOT upgrade due to the problems with the chips in the cartridges.  that's just my opinion.
right now with v1.04, if you get a bad chip cartridge, you can still use the material inside of it with the machine thinking the cartridge is empty.
.
to me, that is reason enough to hold me back from upgrading at the moment, until Cubify solves the jamming cartridges, and chips with errors.
.
your mileage may vary.  ;-)

Cheers!

Well if you upgrade to V1.05 you wont be able to use the aftermarket filament, that's one of the "improvements" they added for that build :)

Hey amf, how did you get past Windows 7 not recognizing the printer? That's where I'm stuck.

Hmm, it fixed itself as I was mucking around when I was updating the firmware from v1.02 to v1.05.  (And yes, I'm running Win7 on a Mac's separate partition for Windows.)  My fix probably had something to do with power cycling the hardware or updating the firmware.  I wrote that previous post on May 30th, so I don't exactly remember.  Which software version and which firmware version are you running at the moment (and which version(s) are you trying to upgrade to)?

I'm still on 1.2 because I've never been able to get Windows 7 to connect to the printer. Is there a way to update the firmware using a thumb drive instead?

I don't know, I don't think so.  Maybe try a different cable?  (I always suspect connector problems first, and then move on to blaming software later.)

Bill,
When I upgraded from 1.03 firmware to 1.05, I could not get it to work on my desktop windows 7 either.
I finally did get it to work on my laptop using windows XP.

Now using my laptop with windows XP, the PC initially sees the CubeX, but then I get some firmware upgrade error when trying to upgrade to the new 1.06 firmware.
Such a pain.

Hello benoit...
Look in the "Firmware update" post in this group.
J.Andre posted the firmware file. You can copy that file onto your desktop and then upload it from the desktop instead thru the internet.
I had the same problems as you, but it worked this way.
