After almost 5 months with a CubeX the UPS man finally came to pick it up and return it to England to never return. I spent much of the 5 months with the CubeX fighting with a very unreliable machine.
Issues over the months:
Poor QC on shipped CubeX
Print cartridges unavailable
Uneven print platform
Uneven print heads
Unreliable Z-Gap
Only prints in .25 and not .10
Freaking out head dumping into platform damaging plate
Bad USB Thumb drive
Failed Cartridge Chip Read
Jammed filament in cartridge
Run away head slams into wiper and bends extruder
Damaged & tangled spool failing to feed filament
Motherboard death
The most frustrating thing was the cascading series of non reliability. After hours leveling and tuning, the machine would stop because of a bad USB read, the next time it would be a cartridge chip read error. I would again plate level, Z-Gap tune, and then have the machine stop half way due to a tangle print cartridge. Initially I was happy to tinker with a cutting edge machine, and as an early adopter I expected some bumps in the road getting it to work properly. I did not expect it to never be reliable after 5 months.
I was excited back in late July to get some new CubeX PLA cartridges off eBay because 3D systems never sent me cartridges originally ordered back in May. I thought I was finally back printing! I calibrated and half way though my second print the machine went a little crazy and the print head ran away and slamming it self at high speed into the side of the wiper tray. This bent the hot end and the machine failed to boot.
Another month with CubeX Support I received a new print head but no new board. So the machine was still dead so they said they were just going to RMA my entire machine and send me a new one because of a problem. After another few weeks ( were now in October ) I received a note saying that they would give me the option to just return the machine. I received a UPS paid return confirmation and UPS came and picked it up a few days ago.
CubeX Support is very responsive but not always helpful. I feel sorry for the poor support team having to deal with a machine plagued with problems that should have never been released. Reading the forums and talking to other owners, the machine bed leveling and z-gap issues make the machine unreliable and shorting electronics.
During the 93% of down time for the CubeX I used a friends Ultimaker and MakerBot Replicator 2. Both had to be tweaked and calibrated but once tuned they produced great prints time after time.
The day the new Ultimaker 2 was released I placed an order and I should have it at the end of October. I hope this will be the prosumer machine I have been looking for.
Happy creating to the forum members with a CubeX, I hope they get it working someday but 5 months of machine failure was enough for me.
