My warranty is expired and my motherboard blew out again when trying to load a cartridge in bay2. The two options I have now are to try and fix one of the two motherboards I have or convert my Cubex to open source Reprap. The cheaper option is the try and fix the motherboard first but I suspect the L7805c2t 5V voltage regulator chip ($5 part) is the faulty component because it's the one the get really hot when I power up the motherboard. Before I try this I want to know if anyone else has had the same issue and fixed it by replacing this chip?

No, I currently have 2 boards, it is NOT the 5 volt regulator it is the processor.
Again, I took 2 blown boards for repair and tested every component for some reason the processor dies and basically shorts the bus.

You cannot repair because you need more than just the firmware, you need their bootloader and they seem to have tied the entire thing to activation and serial numbers.
I can say this with confidence you are wasting your time to attempt a repair.

Are you still trying to fix the mother board. The chip is a PIC processor?
Has Anybody tried to load the Cube X with 3D touch software?

Load the chip directly through the ISP lines.

Could I get you to send me your broken Mother board. I would like try and hack it.

Same issues. Bought 2 of these printers...one is trouble free and the other one came not fully assembled {wiring not attached}, extruder failed and only option is to replace it plus the overheating chip so dead in the water. Cost to send it back for repair isn't worth it, so will probably use it as donor parts for the other one. Just placed and order for new printers NOT FROM CUBIFY

Your 7805 is hot because it working as it should. However it will blow out at those temps eventually. Its the processor gone dead short that is drawing all that current. Always is. The cartridge bay has 15 volts on it through a 3.3v zener diode to ground directly on a pin of the processor. Bad design. I posted some reverse engineering schematics on this forum some time back, look for them and its clear to see.
if you have the skills to identify the regulator and change it maybe you can change the processor as its about the same price.

cheers
