So here is the conversation so far that started in a thread Josef Prusa had going on G+ Rather than keep hijacking Josef's thread I thought I'd move it here and thrash out the details with interested parties

Cube SpawnYesterday 10:44 PMEdit
Hi Josef,
I have admired the RepRap project since I discovered it in 2008 and hope to emulate its goals and ideals - and I have dedicated a substantial amount of my time and resources to building a solution that parallels for manufacturing in general, what RepRap does for 3D printing.

Since your designs have advanced the acceptance and reach of the Mendel. perhaps it is time to create a website that acts more like a github for OSH parts that unlike Thing Averse (heh) is truly open source, but also totally machine readable so that networks of open source machines can retrieve designs and be fed meaningful parameters on compatibility and versioning as well.

My modest effort is (of course) Cubespawn.com
(its only half-rebuilt, since I'm moving it to drupal)

+Cube Spawn we're already working on that, kind of .. well not me but +Gary Hodgson made a Template for GitHub to show of .stls and .scad Files (incl. Thingiview afaik)

http://garyhodgson.github.com/githubiverse-tst/

So let's do a Directory Layer on a fixed page. GitVerse is a bit to easy but you know where this should head. Community Owned, ok?

Cube Spawn10:11 AMEdit
+Nils Hitze Well, Count me in! and my hands are full so community will have to own it, I couldn't keep up!! ;-)

I have seen a few attempts at this, but nothing has been finished yet - I mean SKDB by bryan bishop (heybrian.org) and Smári McCarthy who did something called (I may remember )  TangibleBit http://www.smarimccarthy.com/
there may be others, and I hear Pirate bay wants to host a repository-without-restriction of makeable things..."physibles"

Nils Hitze10:19 AM
I know +Bryan Bishop and i highly appreciate his work - maybe in addition to a user-owned Thingiverse an apt-3dprint would be nice

Cube Spawn2:35 PMEdit
Thats the thing exactly: a repository with machine readable interface - AND a human access method...
Where and what can we (you and I) + others do to actually put up some architecture docs and recruit some skilled coding brains to DO it?!! - Ima post these thoughts to the CubeSpawn google group and quit hijacking Josef's thread

A short note on the rough and ready requirements for

a single subtractive part:

With  versioned command/control file sections, allowing the correct variant of a procedure to be chosen

for a subtractive process, a bajillion details in each of these sections ( i whipped this together ad-hoc - so no crucifictions for screw-ups, please!

File sections:
materials
stock dimensions
stock cutting instructions
I just posted a few hasily jotted thoughts here: Fixturing recipe (for modular fixturing)
Pallet loader/transporter commands - (these will likely be inherent to the pallet transporters function)
fixture assy instructions and metrology
gcode and tooling specs
part/tool/head swap instructions
maybe do it all again for a second op or multiple tool changes
unclamping and fixture cleanup
part handoff to next process
finishing/deburring

Possibly - part use instructions
a subset of Assembly instructions for a new assy
or replacement instructions for a replacement
and likely more

Of course the specifics are different if its a curcuit board or a vacuum formed part etc.
but I have no doubt that a sequence will emerge for each type of operation that is consistent and can be templated, including variations

and a seperatre interface for human readable versions of the same essential info - even if its just meta files in with the machine readable stuff

This is how Skynet will manufacture new and replacement weapons, terminators, and other human extermination technology...

:-)

In jest,

Well, SOMEbody has to give the poor helpless little skynet a hand up, otherwise it'll never realize all that potential we know it has ;-)
