Havana, Aug 7 (acn) Bolivia's
president stressed his appreciation for Cuban cooperation with his
country in the fields of health and education, saying the island's work
has been key to the process of change underway Bolivia.
In a message to the Cuban people during a ceremony marking the 182nd
anniversary of that country's independence, Morales said collaboration
efforts are improving the quality of life of Bolivians, reported Prensa
Latina.
The head of state mentioned the Operation Miracle eye treatment
project, noting that 108,000 people from different countries in the
region have been operated on for eye diseases in 12 ophthalmologic
centers set up in Bolivia, some located in areas bordering other
nations.
Morales explained that an eye surgery of that kind usually costs
between $1000 to $1,500, while under the Operation Miracle program the
services are provided for free to low-income families.
The Bolivian president also highlighted the work of Cuban and
Venezuelan consultants in a national literacy program that aims to
teach more than a million adults how to read and write by 2008.
Morales congratulated the mayors of the 18 municipalities in the
country that declared their territories "illiteracy free" last year.
