Havana, Aug 8 (acn) Guyana agreed
to host the 10th edition of one of the largest arts festival in the
Caribbean known as Carifesta X, following the new Bahaman
administration's decision to not host the event on the grounds that the
country was not prepared for such a big event.
Guyana's Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has invited key
stakeholders from the public and private sector, civil society,
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and international agencies to
participate in the preparation of the festival.
According to a GINA report, the Ministry, in collaboration with
officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, will
begin a series of consultation meetings on August 13 at the Carifesta
Sports Complex for the organization of the event.
According to the Ministry, the Festival is expected to begin by
mid-August 2008 and will follow the usual duration of 10 to 12 days.
Over 20 regions from the Caribbean participated in last year's festival
held in Trinidad and Tobago, showcasing their music, dances, food, art
and crafts, and literature, says the report.
The Carifesta festival emerged in 1970, following an Arts and Writers
Convention when stakeholders crafted a programme to showcase the
Region's rich cultural heritage and at the same time give recognition
to its outstanding artists and art forms. The first Carifesta was held
in 1972.
