Marriott Scout Service Center &
Scout Shop will be closed on July 4, 2012.

To the NCAC Scouting Community,
I trust that you, your family, friends and neighbors are safe and sound after this weekend’s surprisingly strong and destructive summer storms. Many people remain without power today and may not have it for several days. I urge you to check in with those around you, especially the elderly, to ensure they have access to unspoiled food, clean drinking water, air conditioning and any medical care necessary.
Power was restored to Marriott Scout Service Center late Sunday night. Camp William B. Snyder sustained little damage and is fully operational but, at the moment, Goshen Scout Reservation (GSR) remains at less than full power. GSR camp leadership and staff responded swiftly to the storm Friday night, ensuring those on property were safe. No serious injuries or structural damage have been reported and units that were at camp were bussed home Saturday without incident. Since then, GSR staff has been working around the clock to clear fallen trees and debris in an attempt to get the camp operational again.
Safety of our camp staff and campers is our number one concern, so we made a decision to cancel the June 30‑July 6 camping session. Council and camp staffs have been diligently attempting to contact unit leaders through phone and email to alert them of this decision. With so many people without power, often affecting home phone service as well internet and cell service, we are doing our best to contact people through all means and avenues available to us. In fact, our Facebook page turned out to be one of the best communication mediums for this situation.
We are committed to Goshen being open for Week 3 (July 7-13) campers and to rescheduling or refunding those campers who have been affected by the closure during Week 2. If you have questions about Goshen related to this weekend, want to reschedule your campers or request a refund, click here.
I’m proud of our Scouts, Scouters, camp and Council staff. While Mother Nature can be unpredictable, we prove time and time again that it pays to “Be Prepared.”

Fun 4th Facts

The Continental Congress actually declared independence on July 2, 1776, and future president John Adams was sure that would be a date people would remember, but almost right away people began celebrating the 4th because that's the date on the Declaration of Independence.
Here are some links to help you celebrate:

In 2009, National Capital Area Council (NCAC), Boy Scouts of America (BSA) hosted its inaugural Scouting Salutes the Military, bringing together the national community in support of Scouting’s impact on today’s youth and the tremendous service - on and off the battlefield - rendered by the men and women of our armed services.
The concept of Scouting Salutes the Military is unique, simple and powerful: Honor one active duty enlisted person who personifies the values found in the Scout Oath and Law to represent each of the five military branches – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
The Senior Enlisted Advisors for each Service branch are asked to provide candidates for consideration who fit the following criteria: an enlisted (E4-E6) service member who has displayed outstanding military service, performed a heroic deed and/or valorous action and/or demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to community service and who has an existing or recent connection to Scouting either through active program membership as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout or Venturer or as an adult volunteer for the aforementioned Scouting programs.
The event draws a large and diverse audience in support of NCAC, a 501(c)(3) organization, and thus is generally accepted by the federal government to be a ‘widely attended’ event. Members of the community at large - specifically the defense industry and business community - provide sponsorship for the event in support of the critical youth programs provided by NCAC and to allow guests invited by NCAC - Scouts, members of the military and/or other distinguished individuals - to attend.
