Fellow Scouts & Scouters,

Prepared. For Leadership.
One of the qualities most strongly associated with Scouting is leadership. As Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the worldwide Scouting movement, said, “The more responsibility the Scoutmaster gives his patrol leaders, the more they will respond.” Youth that today are planning campfires and teaching merit badges tomorrow will be traveling to the stars and running countries, guided by the values of the Scout Oath and Law, and by the positive example set by their Scout leaders.

Welcome New Board Members
At the Council’s Annual Business Meeting in February, eligible voting members elected NCAC’s 2012 Executive Board, including eight new members: Council President Hugh Redd and executive board members O. Ray Bourland, Joseph J. “Jody” Calabrese III, Thomas Harvey, William R. Hite, Jr., Ed.D., Eric W. Rasmussen, Nhan Thanh Vo, and Daniel A. Witt. Outgoing Council President Dan McCarthy was recognized for his long-time service to the Council and congratulated on his new role…as a Scouting professional! Dan has accepted the position of Director for the Summit Bechtel Reserve. He and his wife Carol, also a dedicated Scouter, will be missed. They will not be far away, though, and many of us will see them at the 2013 Jamboree. Hope to see you there too!

Report to the Nation
As I shared with you in last month’s issue, BSA gave its annual Report to the Nation during Scouting Anniversary Week. Nine Scouts representing every branch of our youth programs were in Washington, DC, to meet with some of the country’s top leaders, offering confirmation to them of the important role Scouting plays in developing our nation’s young people. National BSA has produced both a video and an infographic to highlight the achievements of our values-based program. Share it with others and let’s keep the fantastic momentum we have going and growing!

Gathering of Eagles on the Hill
This fall marks 100 years since the first Eagle Scout Award was earned by Arthur Eldred, whose son - Eagle Scout Willard "Bill" Eldred - marched with us in the BSA Grand Centennial Parade in 2010. During Scouting Anniversary Week a very special Gathering of Eagles on Capitol Hill brought together some of the nation's most influential leaders to honor the centennial anniversary. The event was hosted by U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, NCAC's 2012 Patriot “Good Scout” honoree. In May we will honor our local Eagle Scouts - and Quartermasters and Venturing Silver Awardees - at the Excellence in Youth Leadership Evening. I am pleased to announce that Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca will be this year's class honoree; help us give the second century of Eagles a good start and sign up to be a mentor at the event!

Congratulations!
Last but not least, please join me in congratulating Mike Donaghue, director of Support Services. Mike has been selected to serve as the Scout Executive of the Revolutionary Trails Council in Utica, New York. Mike has been a valuable part of the NCAC team, and we wish him well in his new council!

Yours in Scouting,

Les Baron

New Unit Spotlight: Anchors Aweigh with Ship 100 - the First New Unit of 2012!

The first new units of 2012 are registered, and it is very fitting that in the 100th anniversary year for Sea Scouting, the first new unit is Ship 100 (SSS Dominion), sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, VA. New Skipper Todd Skiles is very excited about the program because he has seen how much Sea Scouting can improve a young person’s chances of being accepted to the US Coast Guard Academy, especially if they have completed Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership (SEAL) training!

Welcome to the NCAC family:

  • Pack 117 - Swans Creek Elementary School, Dumfries, VA
  • Troop 3711 - Monocacy Youth Charitable Organization, Monrovia, MD
To find the nearest pack, troop, ship, crew or team to you, visit BeAScout.org.

Congratulations to a Local Hero!

John Hanson, current Assistant Vice President of the Montgomery Service Area will be awarded the Northeast Hero Award for his service to our Council at the Northeast Region Board Meeting on March 8.  John has tirelessly dedicated himself to serving the youth in Montgomery County and is a strong supporter of Goshen Scout Reservation.  We are very proud that one of our own is being recognized with this distinguished award!

Spring Recruitment Resources

Recruiting Tiger Cubs in spring can help a pack keep the energy going during summer and get a jump start on fall membership campaigns. National has posted a new webinar to help pack leaders plan their spring recruitment. The presentation stresses the importance of getting the right adults organized and involved as Tiger Cub leaders just as these new Cub Scouts are ready to join the program - remember that boys currently in Kindergarten are eligible to join Tiger Cubs at the end of the school year.

To view the webinar click here.
