Hey everyone,

I just replied to an email from David Schaal over in the ATLAS/TAM department.  He said that there is another group that has a lot in common with us, and that they have been trying to make a club as well.  I think this brings new opportunities to the table.  David was talking about potentially putting on a workshop through Communikey that would be jointly hosted by the two clubs (or one club if we merge).  He also said that he would be willing to be a faculty sponsor of the club.  Could we maybe use this to host meetings in ATLAS (it's prettier than the Engineering Center)?

As far as the goals of the club, I think that we should be looking at facilitating the membership of students to Hackerspace.  This can be done by teaching people safety of the tools (saws, mills, etc.), teaching people how to solder, teaching people about electronics that they have available to them, etc.  Basically teaching people about how to use the things that are available to them at the space.  We should also be looking at putting on workshops for the greater student body.  These workshops should probably be a bit less technical, and perhaps more artsy (especially if we are looking at becoming a part of ATLAS).  These workshops could be about things like digital audio production, website design, 3D modelling, mobile app development, etc.

As far as meetings go, I would prefer them to be on Thursday or Friday.  I'll look into getting a space from the ATLAS department as soon as I can.  If we get something in the ECCR first, that's cool too.

ALSO, we now have a facebook group
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hackerspace-Club-at-CU/292569300799026

Check it out, post stuff, invite people.  It might help in the interview when we are trying to get funding to be able to say that 50 people are a part of our facebook group.  If we could get a logo/design that differentiated us from Hackerspace slightly, that might help avoid confusion between the two groups.

Thoughts?

Peter

Awesome work, this ATLAS connection will really help us branch outside of the Engineering Center and reach a new audience.  Do you have a point of contact with the other group?  I'd like to talk to them to see what they're all about.  The prospect of merging (or absorbing) is definitely on the table.

As for meeting times, it's sounding like Friday might work best, but I'll take a poll at the SSD meeting tonight and decide from there.

Thanks for starting up the Facebook group; never would have thought of that.  How do I join it, or do I just 'like' it?  A bit of a Facebook noob here.
