Hi Folks,

I recently met with Esha Gupta (CC ’11) and had a truly fantastic chat with about building up the alumni community here in NorCal. She wrote up so thoughts on our community strategy here:

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this! I believe Esha is now part of the group (@Esha: You there? Pls share your feedback.

Thanks!

Hello All!

Thanks for sending this email out, Matt!

(Just a quick point of clarification...I graduated in 2010!) ;)

Very curious to know what everyone thinks of the ideas that I threw together. There is SO much potential to build such a thriving Columbia Alum community here in the Bay Area!

Hi All,

Thanks for sharing thoughts on this Matt. Esha so glad to see you as part of this group!
Some thoughts:

- I love using this VC as a concrete example of a way we can revamp our community management
- Right now focusing on 2-3 forms of social media is a good start - I would try and post stories/articles on the website instead of using a totally different option (although I love Medium!)
- I also appreciate the idea of a social media strategy that ties in Twitter, FB, Meetup & the google group

I think overall the ideas are fantastic but we need a couple of point people of 1) redesign & strategy & 2) consistent implementation.

Glad to help where I can and support the folks in charge :)

Best,
Nadine

Hi Esha,

Good to hear from you - great thoughts on everything. I agree on a lot of points here especially around web presence etc.

A few questions and points of clarification.

- Where is www.columbiaalum.com being advertised right now? I am - in the process of getting the old president's brother to wipe out the website. Our actual website that we are using is: http://norcal.alumni.columbia.edu/

There are a few reasons for its use right now, before everyone wants to go run off and re-design everything and find new platforms.
- it allows for us to have an email list of Bay Area Alumni that is updated quarterly by Columbia.
- Columbia would like for all clubs to be streamlined under the same platform (this one happens to be NationBuilder which is used for political campaigns -- not that we couldn't/shouldn't explore other alternatives).

I'm all for re-branding, streamlining and improving the social media legs of our club. I think we'd all be more than happy to see that happen. We should discuss during our next board meeting in late Jan (will set up soon, promise).

Would like to break up your thoughts into 2 sections.

1. Addressing what people want/need.
2. Making information in 1. accessible.

Naively i'm thinking 2 is easiest and I think where our time should be most heavily spent is figuring out how to improve providing value add to our area alumni. I think we can work on both in parallel, we just need to align ourselves that way structurally and set some short term/long term goals.

This is great feedback, Stephen - thank you!

Particularly salient: "I think where our time should be most heavily spent is figuring out how to improve providing value add to our area alumni. I think we can work on both in parallel, we just need to align ourselves that way structurally and set some short term/long term goals."

Would love to really hash-out a realistic strategy and implementation plan at our next meeting! Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest differences. There is so much potential here!

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays! :-)

Hey everyone,

The alumni org of Northwestern U has invited us to a trivia night/happy hour. They want to have it any Thursday in March.
It will be at the Polo Grounds Pub and Grill (747 3rd St, SF) and starts at 6:30pm.

Is anyone interested in attending/cohosting this? I will be away for much of March so I cannot attend.

Cheers,
Anna
