I am coordinating with Thumbtack staff re: logistics.

We need two things:

1) Volunteers: 2-3 greeters to work the front desk, manage nametags and such.

2) Suggestions: Help reminding & promoting the event this week to the community.

Current status:

101 Meetup RSVPs and 69 FB RSVPs, many of which are probably duplicates.

Thumbtack is handling booze, food, seating and music.

Also… Anything else I’m forgetting or should be considering? I just moved and started a new job, so I’m not feeling as organized as I would like for an event this size.

Hi All (Matt most specifically)

Wanted to check in on the Thumbtack event on 2/19. I'm unfortunately being pulled out to China on Wednesday so I won't be able to make it. But I wanted to check to see if there's anything we need to do before hand that I can help with.

Will be scheduling March board meeting - please mark doodle for your availability. Note - will be trying to schedule a lunch/dinner with University rep Jaclyn on March 8th. We could do the board meeting with her present/meet with her after the meeting for lunch?

Best,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for this e-mail! Right now I'm pretty available evenings during the week of March 9th but it may be helpful to let us know more specific times as the dates get closer. Meanwhile I'll work on getting some work done on organizing a volunteer event.

@Stephen/marketing team can we send out a  reminder about the CVC event?

@Matt can you give us an update about the Feb 19th event?

Looking forward to touching base with Lisette & Sasha soon.

Best,
Nadin

Hi friends,

Thanks to those that were able to join this afternoon for our February Board meeting conference call.

A few housekeeping notes as we kick of the new year.

Meeting w/ Univ Rep
Meeting on March 9 through March 12. Please respond with your availability to meet with our University Representative Jaclyn Chu.

Board Participation and expectations:
Your participation is essential for making the alumni club successful for all of its members. To all existing members and new board members, we thank you for your time and participation. With a handful of our board moving for family reasons/grad school/work/etc we've lost a bit of organizational structure, I'd like to take this time at the beginning of the year to remind folks of the expectations for being a board member.

- Board members make a best effort to come/participate in the board meetings.
- Board members must plan/help organize at minimum 2 events per calendar year.
- If you do not have time to volunteer with the club, please let me know so that we can re-allocate our resources properly.
- Regional chair board members oversee their region (SF, East Bay, South Bay) and drive planning/execution of events in that region forming subcommittees as needed.

I think we all recognize that there have been a lot of great ideas put on the table by the board members, we need to lean on each other to help put those ideas into executable actions.

Sub-Commitees:
Philanthropy - a lot of interest in this area. Stephe to organize small meeting between Lissette, Sasha, and Nadine to discuss augmenting this space.

Board Positions:
Filled - Treasurer - Sasha Makovik
I will send out an updated list of board members tomorrow. Please note whether or not you are still able to participate in that role.

By-Laws
I will update the by-laws to make sure these items are up to date and clear

Best,
Stephen

Hi all--

Unless I have a fire drill at work on Thursday, I'd be happy to help out! I'll confirm mid-week, once I have a better sense of my work flow.

Matt, the only other thing I can think of is the structure of the interview itself. Will you be the one leading? And if so, is there a list of questions you have prepared/are looking to ask?

Stephen, I think it would make most sense for us to have the board meeting before lunch w/ Jaclyn; that way we could have a structured, productive conversation with her.

Nadine, looking forward to touching base with you around the philanthropic event. Let me know if I can be helpful planning!

Hope you all had a wonderful long weekend!
Sasha

Hi Sasha,

Yes, I'll be leading the interview and I've got the material covered. It'll be a mix of Marco's personal story / how he got here, entrepreneurship and a broader discussion about future of the economy,  jobs and education.

Please let me know when you for sure will be available.

@everyone: If you hadnt accepted an invite to this group, I added you directly so there's no more need to send out mass emails to collections of email addresses. This should cover everyone.

Cheers!
-Matt

How'd the event go? I saw a few of the meet up comments, sounds like it was very well received. Great job everyone - thanks for putting this together Matt.

I’ll let others speak as I am biased, but to me, it was a fantastic event!

Marco was a great speaker, very candid and down to earth with no salesy PR talk. Very few people left before the event was over and all the attendees seemed highly engaged. I saw almost no one in the audience looking down at their phone, which is very unusual.

Anyone else who was there want to chime in?

I think the event was amazing! Thumbtack was a great host an Marco was one of the best founders I've seen give a talk. I heard great feedback from people who enjoyed the event and there were good questions from the audience (apparently there was a lawyer in the audience who had questions about Thumbtack using Craigslist?!). I think this type of event should definitely be a repeat and kudos to Matt for hitting up Marco and asking the questions!

Special shout out to Ferren who did a great job setting up the space/managing the event and Zesty who had such a delicious spread, I was craving mac and cheese all day today.

Did thumbtack pick up the bill for catering/etc? We should put together a thank you gift for Marco and the folks on their side that helped out, any ideas?

Agree to all of the below comments. Event was absolutely amazing, couldn't stop talking about it all day.

Was just going through the news and saw that UClass was acquired by Renaissance Learning. UClass's exec team is all Columbia alums -- a few attended the event yesterday (Chris Yim & Varun Gulati)!! What are our thoughts on having them potentially speak about their experience/decision to sell? This could be next in our speaker series ?

Great idea. I was talking with them and they said the deal actually closed a few hours before the event. We should called them out and celebrated them during the event.

Agreed. From speaking with Varun, they were less than 10 ppl total. It'd be great to hear their story.

And following on the previous comments, the event was great! And thanks for doing the interview Matt. Really liked how you focused some of the conversation on the challenges Marco overcame (like pursuing 40+ VCs).

Sad I wasn't able to make it to this event. I've only heard great things from everyone I know who attended. Great job Matt and congrats!

I'd like to add a +1 to Nadine's idea of having Varun & Chris speak. What they did is amazing!!

I just reached out to Varun. Will do a pre-interview to hear the story and asses how entertaining they’ll be in front of an audience, then get back to you all.

Both a good friends of mine and would be pretty entertaining in front of a large crowd - I don't have any doubts. Then again I am biased.
