Hi Folks,

Quick recap on Tuesday's event with the uClass founders in San Francisco...

Overall, it was a fantastic event!

Varun and Chris were candid, funny and entertaining. Their story––which I didn’t know coming into the event––was both wild and inspirational. The feedback from attendees was universally positive, and my general feeling at the end was one of pride.

Personally, I knew the Marco / Thumbtack event was going to be a slam dunk because I knew Marco and had interviewed him before. Varun and Chris were greater unknowns, and their success feels like proof that there’s really something to this format.

Nadine managed the logistics and––working together with Stephen––wrangled an absolutely stunning space on the 16th floor of a skyscaper with gorgeous views of San Francisco by reaching out to and working with the Columbia alumni community. Kudos to Nadine and Stephen! And kudos to our fellow alumni for reaching out and offering up space.

I’m excited to continue this speaker series and would love to hear your input, feedback and suggestions on:

a) how to make events even more awesome
b) how to spread the word about evenings and increase attendance
c) speakers to invite

Cheers and thanks!
-Matt Mireles

Major kudos to Matt, Nadine, Stephen, and anyone else involved in setting up this event! Really enjoyed the location and the talk.

Responding to Matt's request for feedback
a) how to make events more awesome
-overall they run great. one thing might be the time management of the different parts of the speakers' journey. their stories are really interesting and insightful, but in the case of this event, we only had a little time at the end to squeeze in their acquisition (including why they chose to be acquired, internal discussions/arguments about whether to get more funding or hang on for RL to close the deal, etc).

b) not really sure on this one. i come in from sunnyvale, so part of the reason i have trouble convincing people i know out here to attend is bc they dont want to leave work early and brave the rush hr traffic (hard to blame em :/ )

c) for speakers to invite, do we want to broaden it to earlier stage companies that are getting traction? one startup i know of is Sunski (www.sunskis.com) that got started through their kickstarter. I dont know the founders well (prolly about acquaintance level to be honest), but if I'm the best contact among the board members and we want to go to earlier stage startups, I could connect Matt to meet em.

Hi guys,

Super happy everything came together, I just got back from Peru and wish I was there!

What was turn out like and how was the venue? We scrambled a bit and it was originally described to Nadine and I as a conference room, but now sure how it turned out to be as a forum for this sort of thing. (Nadine - how did food/drinks go? Do we owe you any money?)

Prish - regarding Sunski, I know the founders. We’ve talked about doing this sort of thing with them in the past, now that we have space, if folks think they’d be interesting, I can definitely go talk to them.

I’ve got a few lined up for non-start up talks as well.

Sunskis! Yes, such an awesome idea. They have such a great story too. I’ll reach out to Michael Charley, the co-founder.

Hello Everyone,

I just spoke with Michael Charley from SunSkis and he said yes, he and his co-founder would be happy to speak at an upcoming event!

I’m thinking something in late June / early July. What do you think @Nadine @Stephen?

Hopefully we can find a willing host faster / sooner this time around….

LMK. I’m excited to make this happen.

Cheers!
-Matt

Will start looking for a host now. I think I have one in mind - baby center has a pretty neat atrium space which I think would work out well for this particular presentation.

Sorry for being late to the party.
The U-Class event was great! So much fun and such an inspiring story.
I did put out for some snacks Stephen so will send you the receipt. I think we should work on sponsorships for our event so that we can always provide drinks/food. We were lucky enough that our host donated drinks (out of his own pocket!)
It would also be good to order thank you gifts for both speakers/hosts.

Good ball on the center, they seem awesome.
