350 – Interfaith Project

a) I’d like to add an element of “interfaith” to our “environment”
initiative at the Zen Center as a response to the interfaith call
issued by 350. This is to complement Cathy’s proposal on incorporating
350 Event and environmental awareness into our religious activities.

b) It would be great if the Zen Center can have its own Event Day on
October 24th, 2009 to join the rest of the world in marking
International Day of Climate Action. As of today, there are 1033
events from 53 countries registered for this day at the 350.org site.

Leading to the Event Day:
a) Zen Center can host an Interfaith Forum or panel discussion on
different faith’s view and response to environmental issues and the
role of religions in social movement.

b) Zen Center can host public showing of the documentary “Renewal” and
invite the residents of Sunnyvale and surrounding communities to the
showing. The film documents a variety of religious traditions’ actions
for the preserving of the environment.

The film is used by 350 to promote its campaign and the
film’s producer has granted permission of public showing to
all religious organizations. (renewalproject.net)

c) Show snippets of the documentary “Renewal” in our classes to raise
awareness in our own Zen Center.

On the Event Day
a) Could the Zen Center hold a purification ceremony to cleanse the
environment?
b) Strike the Bell 350 times.
We can invite selected guests (city and government officials, faith
leaders and academics, etc.) to join in this activity. We can also
invite community members to show the concern for the environment.

Wonderful ideas and they are doable! Agree with Michael and Cathy. Engaging the interfaith and academic communities in prior discussion(s) and joining us on the Oct. 24 "Event Day", inviting public officials as well and the community at large to the Event Day are the right tracks. Maybe now is the time to get a reading from Abbot Jian Hu Shifu and the other Dharma Masters on what and how the Zen Center should and can do? As of now, there is a related workshop scheduled at the Zen Center for Oct. 25. And to do all these, we need planning, organizing, coordinating, and execution. We need volunteers to get on board (sorry, I don't know who are on this ctzen-dev list; how far reached have these messages be?) my 2 cents. moira
