The last few weeks i been playing around with the outdoor 802.11ac equipment. I have to say, there are many pluses but as many problems i can see going forward. To achieve higher speeds for clients we need to use 80 MHz of the already highly congested open spectrum. This is going to be a massive challenge when it comes to colocation on towers, instantly we going to see existing services suffer more interference as providers try rollout 802.11ac. Yes it will allow for few devices on towers as you can accommodate more clients per sector antenna, which is a major plus!
I did not pick up any major advances in interference mitigation, which is something i would have looked at first when trying to build a product for outdoor use by wireless ISP's, when the product is using a whopping 80 MHz of the open spectrum. Love the drive for more speed! That is awesome, but in development there are real world delivery scenario's that need to be taken into consideration!
Yes, my own company Sprintnet Pty Ltd will be rolling out 802.11ac, starting this week coming. We will only be doing it on our own towers where we have exclusive right and don't share space with other providers. On towers we share space with other providers, we are going to be forced to narrow our sectors from 60 deg to 30 deg to try avoid any drop in services to our clients.
From tests we have done, colocation, 802.11ac with 802.11n on the same tower, causes enough interference to substantially slow down 802.11n services. I am very interested to see how this pans out in the open spectrum!

Hello all
We have to stay open minded with new ac radio’s and at the very least try new tech otherwise we will never know for ourselves. This is the only way to prove anything. About radio noise there is plenty more than just the radio noise we have to worry about, you will need a spectrum analyser to really see that. If we have one sector that is ac for now I think we should give it a chance and see what happens and how it impacts any other links. We cannot just right it off and say that it is no good. What I have read so far that wireless n is effected when in close proximity. I think the real problem if we all changed our links to ac in Bothasig then this would be havoc at the best with all the sort links.
