Hi All ,

Need comments please on people that have used /experienced this!

Cybersmart is now offering FTTH at R899pm for 20Mb/s.Thats far cheaper than any other provider at 20Mb/s uncapped

www.lightspeed.co.za

Just wondering if its any good, and what the throttling thresholds are. They SAY its uncapped, but we all know …….

Also, their coverage map says bothasig is covered. I have now applied, will post more feedback tomorrow after they made contact. Hopefully.

Kind Regards.

Full Disclosure: I work for Web Africa.

Nowhere on the page does it says "FTTH" (fibre to the home) in Bothasig. It does however show on the map that "FTTB" (fibre to the business) is available - with the implication that you need to take out a contract for a minimum of R4,999pm per month for a 50Mb line (minimum speed) without any other services (telephone number etc). Those other services are of course available.

FTTH is separately shown as being exclusively available to residents of Parkview and Parkhurst.

When it is really available in Bothasig, I'll definitely be signing up. ;)

Related, uncapped and unlimited are different. Uncapped means you may be throttled. Unlimited means you may not be throttled. Note of course that *nobody* has an "Unlimited" offer. Capped accounts are *never* throttled and are usually prioritised better than uncapped. For most users, uncapped accounts are actually silly - since most people using them actually use less bandwidth than is available on a capped account that costs the same.

Personally I use a 50GB/200GB capped service on a 20Mb line and barely ever reach that cap. WA offers a "60/240GB" account with a 20Mb line for R624 per month - without contracts. Other ISPs offer similar products on DSL. You'll need to add your Telkom telephone line costs still unfortunately (R150-odd for the cheaper packages) - but that still adds up to less than R800. Being on the WUG also means your "bandwidth-intensive" needs are not as high as other hoarders - but everyone's needs are different and so this might not be good enough for you.

B.

Hi there.

Thanks for the comprehensive explanation!

Hi all ,

So a quick follow up on this whole lightspeed ftth advert.

Turns out , Cybersmart are prepared to offer ftth, PROVIDED they get a R10k pm commitment per DT (distribution point) they need to install. So means if I want ftth, they need R10k for everyone in my street to commit. Makes business sense, but it’s a pity. Works well in a complex, flat type environment.

Louis, what range does a distribution point cover, this end of Bothasig, or just 10 houses in your street?

They were clear it has to be per street. It involves cost of trenching etc…
