Dear colleagues,

HiPEAC stakeholder member project TETRACOM (Technology transfer in computing systems) had its final review with the European Commission at the end of last week and received a final overall rating of ‘excellent’ (the highest a project can get).

The mission of TETRACOM has been to boost European academia-to-industry technology transfer (TT) in all domains of Computing Systems through its unique instrument, the Technology Transfer Project (TTP). TTPs have helped to lower the barrier for researchers to make the first steps towards commercialization of their research results. TTPs were designed to provide incentives for TT at small to medium scale via partial funding of dedicated, well-defined, and short-term bilateral academia-industry collaborations that bring concrete R&D results into industrial use.

TETRACOM ran 50 individual TTPs in 6 different categories of ICT and computing systems: communications & multimedia (12 TTPs), industrial automation (10), health (8), safety & security (5), automotive (5) and data analytics (10). Over two thirds of partner companies were SMEs. The TTPs have had meaningful impact. From a financial point of view, they have led to noteworthy returns-on-investment through cost reductions or creation of new products for the market.  From a community-building point of view, they have led to creation of jobs in industry and movement of people between sectors, and the setting-up or preparation of several new startups.

In the final review meeting, the project was praised for having produced high-quality deliverables and having met or exceeded its initial objectives.  The management and dissemination activities were also identified as being very strong and having allowed for a smoothly-run operation with the desired impacts.
