I cannot seem to open .mp4 files.  We downloaded virtualDub, but could still not import (or open) a .mp4 file.  When I select open any file type and select my .mp4 file I get an error message that it is an unsupported file time. Does anyone have some advice?  I am sure I am doing something dumb, but I cannot figure out what to do.
Thanks
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

It sounds like maybe you've read the Ctrax video documentation at http://ctrax.sourceforge.net/install.html#input-video-formats , but I thought I'd send the link just in case. Ctrax definitely won't open an MP4 file. VirtualDub may or may not. Some people have reported better luck using AVI Demux for video conversion.

I hope that gets you on the right path. Does anybody else on this list have experience with Ctrax and MP4s?

Hi John,
Thanks for the help. Avi Demux seems promising...I can open up an .mp4 file and then save it as an .avi file. However, when I try to open up the .avi file in ctrax it is unhappy and sez the AVbin was successfully loaded but it could not load the avi file. I do not see the options in Avi Demux to save the video file that are listed in the Ctrax video documentation site. Do you have any other advice?

Hi Melissa,

Ctrax by itself can only read uncompressed AVIs, and I'm not sure
whether AVI Demux can create those. Ctrax uses a third-party library,
AVbin, to try and open compressed AVIs, but it's still limited. The
problem is that a compressed AVI can be formatted in many different
ways. People on this list have reported success using AVI Demux to
output AVIs with M-JPEG compression, I think.

Yes, using Avidemux to generate M-JPEG as input for Ctrax works well for us
and is our default.

With M-JPEG, there is "vertical flipping," see

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/ctrax/QSxLn33mQPA/rvdDRyKICnAJ

for details and solution.

John, there may be a case for a "checkbox" (plus command-line option) for
vertical flipping in Ctrax. Has the advantage that the MAT-file is correct
then and *all* tools using the MAT-file will work fine. But the current fix
(e.g., FixErrors checkbox) works fine for me. (I have similar "checkboxes"
in my scripts that use the MAT-file.)

Thanks,

Uli

Hi all,

maybe this is an old thread, but anyway, there might be someone to whom my post could be helpful. I successfully used .mp4 videos with ctrax (0.5.5) for tracking the movement of smooth newt larvae (a single individual in each arena, nine arenas per video, 25 minutes). The cameras stored the videos in a very stupid format (.mts), so I had to convert them for which I used ffmpeg. Unfortunately, the recommended formats for ctrax would have been ridiculusly large: the uncompressed AVI ~ 2 Tb, the ufmf ~ 5.7 Gb, so I chose the .mp4 format compatible with opencv instead. Currently I am checking the annotation files + videos together in ctrax, but all seems to be in order, at least I see no problems that might originate from using compressed videos.

All the best,
Zoltan
