Chapman President, Board of Directors, New Haven Free Public Library; David Ring, New England Regional President and Head of Enterprise Banking, First Niagara; Will Ginsberg, President and CEO, Community Foundation for Greater New Haven; Donald Margulies, Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright, Theater Studies, Yale University
WHAT: The New Haven Free Public Library is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year with a new public image, including new library cards, signs, banners, and program flyers. The NHFPL will recognize the tremendous support of First Niagara as the 125 Presenting Anniversary Sponsor.
When the New Haven Free Public Library first opened its doors on February 21, 1887, it offered 26 newspapers and 80 periodicals. Later that year, the library acquired 3,500 books. Over the past 125 years, the NHFPL has grown and adapted to new technology and community needs. In 2011, almost 600,000 users came through the doors of the NHFPL, more than 100,000 used electronic reference databases, nearly 25,000 children and teens attended library programs, and 12,000 people attending a meeting of a community organization held at a library location.
