IN BRIDGEPORT, ATTORNEY GENERAL TONG TO PROVIDE UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO ADDRESS OPIOID EPIDEMIC AND YOUTH VAPING

(Hartford, CT) – At 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 18 at the Burroughs Community Center in Bridgeport, Attorney General William Tong will meet with community-based substance abuse prevention leaders from The Hub, the Regional Behavioral Health Action Organization for Southwestern Connecticut, to provide an update on the state’s efforts to address the opioid epidemic and youth vaping.

RBHAOs are created in statute and funded primarily through federal block grant dollars administered by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. They provide a range of planning, education and advocacy initiatives related to mental health and substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery. Connecticut is divided into five RBHAOs representing each region of the state.

Connecticut led 34 states and territories last year in brokering a $438.5 million settlement with JUUL, resolving a two-year bipartisan investigation into the company’s marketing and sales practices. Connecticut is due to receive approximately $16 million through the settlement, which is to be used for cessation, prevention, and mitigation. Over the past four years, Connecticut has led nationwide efforts to hold the entire addiction industry accountable for the opioid epidemic, securing more than $50 billion for treatment and prevention and $600 million for Connecticut alone. Those funds must be used to support evidence-based treatment, prevention, and recovery programs.

Over the next month, Attorney General Tong will hold meetings with each regional RBHAO to discuss how community-based organizations can access and guide those funds to address the opioid epidemic and youth vaping.

The RBHAO for southwestern Connecticut (Region 1), encompasses the municipalities of Bridgeport, Darien, Eason, Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroe, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Stratford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport, and Wilton.

Last week, Attorney General Tong met with RBHAO representatives from the Alliance for Prevention & Wellness (Region 2), encompassing the towns of Ansonia, Bethany, Branford, Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Derby, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, East Haven, Essex, Guilford, Haddam, Hamden, Killingworth, Madison ,Meriden, Middlefield, Middletown, Milford, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Old Saybrook, Orange, Portland, Seymour, Shelton, Wallingford, Westbrook, West Haven, and Woodbridge.

IN GLASTONBURY, ATTORNEY GENERAL TONG TO PROVIDE UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO ADDRESS OPIOID EPIDEMIC AND YOUTH VAPING

(Hartford, CT) – At 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25 at Amplify in Glastonbury, Attorney General William Tong will meet with local leaders and community-based substance abuse prevention advocates from Regional Behavioral Health Action Organizations in the North Central Region to provide an update on the state’s efforts to address the opioid epidemic and youth vaping.

Regional Behavioral Health Action Organizations are created in statute and funded primarily through federal block grant dollars administered by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. They provide a range of planning, education, and advocacy initiatives related to mental health and substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Attorney General Tong backed legislation to direct those JUUL settlement funds to RBHAOs to combat youth vaping and nicotine use. That legislation passed unanimously in both the House and Senate and has now been signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont.

Over the past four years, Connecticut has also led nationwide efforts to hold the entire addiction industry accountable for the opioid epidemic, securing more than $50 billion for treatment and prevention and $600 million for Connecticut alone. Those funds must be used to support evidence-based treatment, prevention, and recovery programs.

Attorney General Tong is holding meetings with each RBHAO to discuss how community-based organizations can access and guide those funds to address the opioid epidemic and youth vaping.

The North Central Region covers the towns of Andover, Avon, Berlin, Bloomfield, Bolton, Bristol, Burlington, Canton, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Granby, Hartford, Hebron, Kensington, Manchester, Marlborough, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Plymouth, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Somers, South Windsor, Southington, Stafford, Suffield, Tolland, Vernon, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.

Attorney General Tong has previously met with RBHAO representatives from the Alliance for Prevention & Wellness (Region 2), The Hub (Region 1), the Western CT Coalition (Region 5), and the Southeastern Regional Action Council (Region 3).

WHAT: Attorney General Tong community meeting on opioid and youth vaping funding.

NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY: ATTORNEY GENERAL TONG, DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER PROTECTION, DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION SERVICES, WEST HARTFORD MAYOR AND POLICE LEADERS TO URGE CONNECTICUT RESIDENTS TO SAFELY DISPOSE OF UNNEEDED MEDICATIONS

(Hartford, CT) – At noon on Thursday, October 26 at the West Hartford Police Department, Attorney General William Tong and leaders from the Department of Consumer Protection and Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services will join representatives from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in urging Connecticut residents to take advantage of DEA’s National Drug Prescription Take Back Day on Saturday, October 28.

Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at close to 5,000 local drop-off locations nationwide.
