Bridgeport's 2025 Math Meet: Inspiring Future Scholars Through Problem-Solving and Competition
Bridgeport, CT — Bridgeport Public Schools announces the 2025 Math Meet, the district’s premier and longest-running academic competition for middle school students. Taking place on Wednesday, May 29, 2025, at Sacred Heart University’s West Campus Auditorium, the event will feature 132 students from 22 middle schools in a spirited display of mathematical skill, critical thinking, and academic excellence.
“The Math Meet is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of the hard work, talent, and determination of our students and educators,” said Dr. Royce Avery, Interim Superintendent of Bridgeport Public Schools. “This event reminds us that with the right support and opportunities, our students rise to every challenge.”
Herminio Planas, Director of Mathematics, added, “The Math Meet is a testament to what’s possible when curiosity meets opportunity. In a room full of problem solvers, we don’t just celebrate correct answers—we celebrate growth, perseverance, and the shared excitement of learning together.”
The Bridgeport Math Meet began in the 1980s, founded by visionary educators who aimed to motivate students through problem-solving challenges and to inspire college aspirations by hosting the event in a university setting. At the time, only 10 middle schools participated, each selecting a team of three 7th graders and three 8th graders to represent their school at the district-wide competition.

Over the past four decades, the Math Meet has grown significantly, now engaging students from all 22 middle schools in the district. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the tradition persisted through virtual competitions, underscoring the district’s commitment to academic excellence and continuity.

During the competition, students will be challenged to solve rigorous math problems within a limited time frame using only pencils and basic four-function calculators. Each problem is scored between 1 and 2 points, with cumulative scores determining both individual and team rankings.

The competition will run from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, culminating in an awards ceremony recognizing top-performing students in both grade levels, the top three schools overall, and the most improved school. The coveted championship banner—circulated among winning schools for over 40 years—will once again be awarded to the first-place team.

The 2025 Math Meet continues to embody the spirit of academic excellence, resilience, and inspiration that has defined this Bridgeport tradition for generations.
