Mayor Ganim Announces New Motor Vehicle Mill Rate

Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Ganim announced that the mill rate for Bridgeport motor vehicles was decreased from 43.25 by 25% to 32.46 mills. Bridgeport has long advocated for this statewide initiative, which would result in significant savings for Bridgeport taxpayers. This fiscal year, the value of the cars increased by 15%; the new tax amount reflects this increase. The average cost per vehicle is set at $375, whereas the previous mill rate was $434.

“My administration anticipated that balancing the FY23 budget would be difficult due to previous year decreases in state revenue," Mayor Ganim stated. "We will be able to support public safety, as well as education and enrichment of the community while decreasing the mill rate,” “My top priority for our residents is that funding gets to the right place.”

State Representative, Antonito Felipe stated, “We are giving the State of Connecticut the largest tax cut in 27 years. The mill rate cap for the car tax being a part of that is huge for Bridgeport residents. My hope is that state and local government will work side by side to find a way to eliminate that tax altogether in the near future.”

The FY23 mill rate on real estate and personal property would remain at 43.45 The FY23 budget includes a $601,000,000 increase to support education, health, and safety programs.

In addition, seniors 65 and older will benefit from an extended senior tax relief program, with the qualifying limit raised to a maximum yearly family income of $58,000.

“With many folks still recovering from the pandemic and inflation making everyday items more expensive, the State budget we passed this session aimed to help by offering over $600 million in tax cuts to Connecticut residents. For Bridgeport residents, this means ending the disparity of paying higher taxes on cars than residents in neighboring suburbs and receiving an expanded savings on your state taxes for taxes paid to the City. The State budget also includes millions of dollars in new aid to Bridgeport, helping the City to hold the line on property taxes during these challenging times,” said State Representative Steve Stafstrom (D – Bridgeport), who also serves as House Chair of the legislature’s Judiciary Committee.
