Statement from State Representative Craig Fishbein (R-90), Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, Re: Legislative Hearing Concerning the State Audit of the Department of Corrections

"It's clear from the auditors' report and today's hearing that critical oversight is woefully inadequate, and that significant changes need to be made to preserve both the safety and functionality of the Department of Corrections.  At best, the concerns regarding extended paid leave, improperly recorded and miscoded union activity, unauthorized overtime, and the inability to locate valuable state assets is problematic. Those severe lapses could be, on one hand, characterized as incompetence, and on the other a mere lack of oversight.  I appreciate my colleagues taking this issue seriously and, hopefully, working to eliminate what appears to be abuse of state policies and procedures."
