DEPUTY SPEAKER ANTHONY NOLAN, STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND ADVOCATES CALL FOR ENDING SUSPENSIONS FOR NON-VIOLENT BEHAVIOR IN CONNECTICUT SCHOOLS

The Re-Imagining School Safety Coalition, alongside Deputy Speaker Anthony Nolan, students, families, and education justice advocates, will hold a press conference at the Connecticut State Capitol on Wednesday, February 11 at 11:30 AM at LOB Room 1C to call for legislation ending suspensions for non-violent behavior in Connecticut schools.
Under current law, students can be removed from school for vague and subjective reasons such as “serious disruption,” resulting in widespread use of out-of-school suspension that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown students, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ youth, without improving school safety.
The proposed legislation amends Connecticut General Statutes §10-233c to limit suspension to cases involving violent behavior or immediate risk of physical harm, while strengthening student protections and due-process requirements. Advocates argue this bill redefines school safety by prioritizing connection, prevention, and support over punishment and exclusion. Speakers will highlight state data showing nearly half of suspensions are issued for non-violent policy violations and will uplift evidence-based alternatives, including restorative approaches that keep students learning and strengthen school communities.
