BROKEN UMBRELLA THEATRE MARKS 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEW HAVEN FREE
PUBLIC LIBRARY WITH CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN ADVENTURE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE

The New Haven Free Public Library Foundation has partnered with Broken
Umbrella Theatre to mark the 125th anniversary of the New Haven Free
Public Library with an after-hours, choose-your-own adventure theatrical
experience. The performance will take audience members behind the scenes
of 125 years of library secrets and history, including the controversial
birth of the library, introducing new competition to the already
established Institute Library and famous 1930s WPA art murals buried in
the walls. The performance travels from room to room with puppetry,
song, dance, stories and spectacles.

The Library Project was commissioned by the New Haven Free Public
Library Foundation, and was conceived and developed by A Broken Umbrella
Theatre. The Library Project features an all-volunteer cast and crew of
over 60 artists from New Haven and beyond, including NHFPL Director
Christopher Korenowsky and Institute Library Executive Director Will
Baker. The Artistic Director is Ian Aldermen and the project historian
is Colin Caplan.

The Library Project will be performed Saturdays and Sundays October
20-21, 27-28 and November 3-4. The play is recommended for ages 8 and
up. Because A Broken Umbrella Theatre is dedicated to making theater
that is accessible to all, tickets are pay-what-you-can at the box
office and online. Reservations are highly recommended. Beginning
September 20, make online reservations by visiting
www.abrokenumbrella.org. The box office will open at the Ives Main
Library one hour prior to each show.

The New Haven Free Public Library officially opened its doors on
February 21, 1887 offering 28 newspapers and 80 periodicals. That June,
the library began circulation of its 3,500 volumes. The New Haven
Evening Register reported at the time: “New Haven people have long
wished for a free library. Now they will have got it and a good one
too.”

“I cannot think of a better way to end the public library’s
milestone anniversary year than partnering with A Broken Umbrella
Theatre to celebrate the rich and varied past of the organization. I
reflect with pride on the last 125 years of the NHFPL serving the
residents of New Haven. Since our public library founders first dreamed
of unleashing potential and creating community, the NHFPL has grown into
an irreplaceable destination open to all,” said NHFPL Director
Christopher Korenowsky.

The New Haven Free Public Library’s 125 Anniversary Sponsor is First
Niagara Bank. As of October 3, 2012, additional support for this
commissioned work is provided by Alderman-Dow Iron & Metal, David A.
Beckerman Foundation, Capital Growth of New Haven, The Community
Foundation, CT Humanities, The Department of Cultural Affairs of the
City of New Haven, Eder Family Foundation, Marcum LLP, New Alliance
Foundation, Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, York-Suzio Hill, Norman and
Caron Alderman, Marvin and Helaine Lender, and Mark and Judy Sklarz.

Start Community Bank is the lead sponsor of BRANCHING OUT storytelling
workshops during the months of September and October. These workshops,
in each branch of the NHFPL, will collect personal stories about
citizens’ library-going experiences and will become part of the
performances at the Ives Main Library.
