New agreement expands Central's international exchange program

New Britain, Conn. – A new academic partnership will enable more students in STEM majors to study and gain hands-on job skills in Germany and here in Connecticut.
Professor Andreas Weißenbach, the head of Mechanical Engineering at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Mosbach, Germany, visited Central Connecticut State University on Oct. 24 to sign a student exchange agreement and meet with President Zulma R. Toro, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Kostelis, School of Engineering, Science, Technology (SEST) Dean Steven Minkler, and other members of the president’s executive team and SEST faculty members.
The agreement will broaden the academic and cultural opportunities available to students at Central and DHBW through coursework and internship opportunities at both institutions. Generally, exchange students will study for three months at their host university, then intern at participating companies for three months.
“This partnership will ensure our continued growth in a rapidly expanding global society,” Toro said. “It is more important than ever to invest in our students and ignite their interest in science, engineering, and technology. With our encouragement, they can become the agile thinkers and problem solvers that will drive innovation in the 21st century."
Four students from DHBW Mosbach already have spent a semester at Central, and two course-abroad groups from Central have visited the DHBW Mosbach campus. A third course abroad at Central is planned for the year 2025.
The agreement is based on a letter of intent signed by both institutions in 2022 after more than a decade of collaboration on mutual student and faculty exchange opportunities.
