COMING UP: Rep. Courtney Joins Virtual Workshop on Grant Opportunities for Local Museums, Theaters, and Artistic Venues with Southeastern CT Cultural Coalition

NORWICH, CT—This morning at 9:00am ET, Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) will join the Southeastern Connecticut Cultural Coalition and representatives from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a virtual workshop to encourage coalition members to pursue federal funding for humanities and arts projects. The workshop, titled You Can't Get a NEA Grant If You Don't Apply, will allow attendees to participate in breakout rooms and will help encourage, prepare, and get applicants ready to submit various grant applications to the NEA, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and other agencies. This morning’s workshop is particularly timely following authorization of new federal support through H.R. 133, and the American Rescue Plan Act (H.R. 1319).

As part of the annual government appropriations portion of the bill, H.R. 133 elevated FY 2021 funding for the NEA and NEH to $167.5 million each—$5.25 million more than 2020 enacted levels. The bill included language that permits grant funds appropriated this year, as well as funding appropriated in FY 2019 and 2020, to be used for operating expenses to help offset the impact of COVID-19. H.R. 133 also included $15 billion in dedicated support for live performance venues, performing arts organizations, museums, independent movie theaters, and other similar organizations that support artists and content creators.

The American Rescue Plan Act allocated a new round of $135 million to both the NEA and NEH in order to provide continued support to these organizations. H.R. 1319 stipulated that 40% of funds are to be reserved for grants to state art agencies and regional art organizations, and 60% reserved for direct grants that support organizations’ programming and general operating expenses. This funding is estimated to result in support for approximately 234,000 jobs in the Arts & Humanities across the country, and will be made available in the coming weeks.
