CONNECTICUT DEMOCRATS APPLAUD GOVERNOR LAMONT’S PLAN TO LOWER HEALTHCARE COSTS AND PROTECT TAXPAYERS FROM CORPORATE LOOPHOLE

HARTFORD – Connecticut Democrats applaud Governor Ned Lamont’s proposal to lower healthcare costs for working families, ending a corporate loophole that has allowed massive companies to shift the cost of employee healthcare onto Connecticut taxpayers.

“For too long, a handful of massive corporations have padded their profits by paying low wages and offering little to no benefits, forcing their workers onto state public assistance where taxpayers pick up the tab," said Governor Ned Lamont at a press conference unveiling the plan. "That’s not just unfair to Connecticut families; it’s unfair to the thousands of responsible local businesses that do the right thing and invest in their workforces. This proposal levels the playing field, protects taxpayer dollars, and directly reinvests over $100 million into lowering healthcare premiums for our middle class."

Governor Lamont’s proposal would require large employers to cover their fair share when their employees rely on HUSKY, generating more than $100 million annually that will be directed toward lowering health insurance premiums for working families.

As Democrats fight to make healthcare more affordable, Ryan Fazio and Connecticut Republicans have opposed critical efforts to lower healthcare costs, and refuse to call out Donald Trump’s extreme cuts to the programs hundreds of thousands of Connecticut residents rely on. Connecticut Democrats are standing up for families; the GOP is standing with the same corporate special interests and MAGA politicians making life more expensive.

“The largest, most profitable corporations should not be pushing healthcare costs onto workers and Connecticut taxpayers. If a company can afford to generate billions in profits, it can afford to do right by its employees," said Connecticut Democratic Party Chair Roberto Alves. "Connecticut Democrats and Governor Lamont are committed to closing loopholes, lowering healthcare costs, and making sure working families and taxpayers aren’t left footing the bill while large corporations avoid their responsibilities.”
