Smithsonian Magazine Review- Best Books of 2024 - Recommended by Elizabeth C. Babcock, director of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum

“…Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America’s History-Making Women provides a timely consideration of the often overlooked, yet influential ways in which presidential spouses have shaped America...Well-researched and drawing on memorable primary sources, this thought-provoking book brings these women to life in a way that enriches our public discourse about gender, politics and presidential leadership, and provides a critically important perspective about women in American history.”

First Ladies Make HistoryWho are the first ladies of the United States and what do they do? With this special award-winning children’s book, First Ladies Make History, published by the White House Historical Association, co-authors Anita and Giovanna McBride explain that this is a big question with many answers.  There is no rulebook defining the role of the first lady, yet the first ladies have worked hard to make the world a better place for more than two hundred years.  First Ladies Make History is the first book of its kind, taking young readers beyond the typical fashion and hospitality topics associated with first ladies to the important contributions they have made to society and culture throughout American history

About the Barnum Museum: The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT is the last surviving establishment attributed to the extraordinary American icon, Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891).  The Barnum Museum is the City of Bridgeport’s first National Historic Landmark designation by the National Parks Services.

Originally established by P.T. Barnum to promote artistic and cultural heritage and to celebrate scientific advancements in American technology, the Museum was intended to inspire the public to reach beyond the limits of ordinary expectations and to see the world as a place of curiosity, opportunity, knowledge and wonder.  Barnum’s story is a fascinating exploration of 19th century social, commercial, political and industrial history, and his tale begins long before his circus enterprise was created in 1872.  He was an entrepreneur, museum proprietor, business leader, political leader, urban developer, community benefactor, philanthropist, temperance leader, emancipationist, lecturer and author.  Barnum was committed to the intellectual and cultural development of society, and was a voice for the pursuit of freedom, choice and knowledge.

The Barnum Museum is currently under major construction and renovation and is not open to the general public at this time.  We miss you and apologize for this inconvenience, but a new, immersive, 21st century Barnum Museum is on the horizon.  This is the largest, most comprehensive historic restoration in the Museum’s 130 year-old history.  During this time, we welcome you to tune into our YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/@BarnumMuseum/videos) for new content and updates every week.  Barnum Museum: 203-331-1104 ext. 100.  Barnum-museum.org
