MAYOR JUSTIN ELICKER, EDUCATION AND CITY LEADERS TO ANNOUNCE SUMMER PILOT AND SERIES OF UPDATES FOR NEW HAVEN’S NEW LITERACY AND MATH TUTORING INITIATIVE, PROVIDING SUMMER AND AFTERSCHOOL ACADEMIC AND ENRICHMENT SUPPORT FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS IN GRADES 1 TO 5

 

Initial nonprofit partner organizations selected and tutoring set to begin in June 2023, serving 600+ students during initial summer pilot with plans to expand in the 2023-34 school year.

 

NEW HAVEN, CT – On Monday, May 15 at 1 p.m., Mayor Justin Elicker will be joined by incoming Superintendent Madeline Negrón and other education and city leaders to announce the summer pilot, initial nonprofit partner organizations, and other related updates for the City of New Haven’s literacy and math tutoring initiative, a new academic and enrichment program to help support struggling students in first to fifth grades. The event will take place at New Haven Reads, located at 85 Willow Street.

 

In the 2021-22 school year, only 16.7 percent of New Haven third graders met or exceeded state proficiency standards in English Language Arts (compared to 46.7 percent statewide) and only 13.3 percent of New Haven third graders met or exceeded state proficiency standards in math (compared to 47.4 percent statewide). As one component of a multi-pronged effort to addresses these challenges, the New Haven tutoring initiative was proposed to help combat the loss of classroom instructional time and the social-academic isolation caused by the pandemic. The new tutoring initiative will leverage expert partner organizations and will be supported by trained staff, volunteers, interns, and students to complement the instruction at New Haven Public Schools through additional time-on-task and supports for students and families that help strengthen literacy and math proficiency.

 

In December 2022, Mayor Elicker, New Haven Public School officials, and nonprofit education leaders first proposed the $3 million initiative, which was subsequently approved by the Board of Alders in February 2023 and followed by the issuance of an RFP to identify partner organizations. At the news conference, the initial set of partner organizations, the details of the summer pilot phase, and additional programmatic updates will be announced.
