TOMORROW: Courtney Visits Windham for Intermodal Transportation Center Ribbon-Cutting

Later, Rep. Courtney will visit Groton Long Point for the Commissioning of a New Fire Boat

NORWICH, CT – Tomorrow morning at 10:00am ET, Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) will visit Windham to join Mayor Tom DeVivo and members of the Windham Town Council for the official ribbon-cutting of the Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC).

The Windham ITC is a project that’s been in the making for thirteen years, starting in 2008 when Rep. Courtney, alongside Windham town officials and ConnDOT, helped secure a $430,650 federal Transportation, Community, and System Preservation Program (TCSP) grant through the Federal Highway Administration. The federal TCSP funding was used to complete the project’s engineering, evaluation, design, and construction feasibility.

The 292-space municipal parking garage will dedicate 251 spaces to the public, and will dedicate 41 spaces to the Town’s police department.

A New Fire Boat for Groton Long Point Firefighters

Later tomorrow morning, at 11:30am ET, Courtney will visit Groton Long Point to meet with the Groton Long Point Association (GLPA) Board of Directors, GLPA President Mike Flynn, members of GLPA’s Volunteer Fire Department, and other local officials to celebrate the launch of the Volunteer Fire Department’s new Fire and Rescue Boat. The boat will be used for a variety of emergency response situations, and replaces an older vessel that was outmoded and obsolete.

Rep. Courtney worked with the GLPA to help secure the federal funding needed for the new fire boat. In April of 2020, he wrote to Captain Kevin B. Reed (USCG), Federal Maritime Security Coordinator for the Long Island Sound, in support of GLPA’s application to receive funding through the U.S. Maritime Administration’s FY2020 Port Security Grant program. In June of 2020, Courtney announced that the GLPA Volunteer Fire Department had officially been awarded a federal grant of $320,805 to replace their outdated vessel with a new Fire Boat.

Members of the press are invited to join tomorrow’s launch, and to meet with Rep. Courtney and GLPA firefighters to discuss details of the new fire boat.
