NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On Thursday at 1 PM, Dunkin Donuts workers employed at the Connecticut Service Plazas will deliver a Christmas present to their boss at the Applegreen Corporation–a bag filled with over a million dollars in play money. His company has withheld that amount from workers in violation of their rights since it took over all the Dunkin’ service plazas outlets in 2021.
By law, Applegreen and all the other fast food employers at the service plazas should be paying the legally mandated Standard Wage, an amount guaranteed to workers employed by companies contracted to the state, including all the fast food outlets at the Connecticut service plazas, which operate on state-owned land through state contracts. Until recently, few if any of these outlets in the interstate plaza system complied with the law – one of many reasons that workers have organized to fight for better conditions and a union across the plazas.
Workers will deliver the gift to the New Haven offices of Trevor Moore, Northeast CEO of the giant international Applegreen Corporation, which employs roughly 175 Dunkin’ Donuts workers at the 23 plazas across Connecticut. (Moore’s offices in Connecticut are located at the headquarters of Project Services, the Applegreen-owned company that oversees management of the plazas).
Accompanying the workers and speaking before the delivery will be 32BJ SEIU's Neil Diaz, Connecticut District Leader of the union that has been organizing with workers since 2019.
“We are proud to support the Dunkin/Applegreen workers who are stepping forward to deliver this righteous Christmas present to Trevor Moore,” said Diaz. “It’s time all the fast food outlets pay their workers the legal standard wage, and this bag of cash shows how much workers have been losing as a result of some companies’ continued refusal to meet their legal obligation. As operators on Connecticut state property, they need to live up to the labor standards that our state demands of its subcontractors, an obligation that would create a more stable workforce for the benefit of everyone who visits the plazas.”
