MURPHY CELEBRATES CONNECTICUT’S LARGEST PROTECTED DRINKING WATERSHED, HIGHLIGHTS IMPACT OF HIGHLANDS CONSERVATION ACT
**Thursday, June 27th at 1pm**
WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday will join the Housatonic Valley Association, CT DEEP, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and conservation advocates to celebrate the protection of 1,300 acres of drinking watershed land in Connecticut, thanks to Murphy’s Highlands Conservation Act (HCA). This marks the first property in an Environmental Justice community to be protected by the HCA, as well as being the largest property protected by the HCA in Connecticut since its inception twenty years ago. The HCA allows states to access matching federal funding for projects to promote conservation, tourism, and recreation in the region.
Murphy first introduced legislation to reauthorize the Highlands Conservation Act in 2016. It passed as part of the fiscal year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill and extends protections through 2028, providing $10 million to conserve 3.5 million acres of land in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.
