MAYOR JUSTIN ELICKER TO JOIN LIBBY’S ITALIAN PASTRY SHOP TO CELEBRATE ITS 100TH BUSINESS ANNIVERSARY AND COMPLETION OF NEW RENOVATIONS
Mainstay of Wooster Street and New Haven’s Little Italy, Libby’s received $41,951 grant from the City of New Haven to help pay for storefront improvements.
NEW HAVEN, CT. – Today, Wednesday, September 7th at 1 p.m., New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker will join the owners of Libby’s Italian Pastry Shop – Marc, PJ, and Salvatore D’Angelo – along with other city and civic leaders to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wooster Street bakery and café as well as the completion of an extensive renovation to the interior and exterior of the business at 135 Wooster Street. The family-owned and operated business – a Wooster Street mainstay whose cookies are baked fresh daily – was founded in 1922 by Liberato and Giuseppina Dell’Amura and is now run by the fourth generation of the family. Libby’s currently has nineteen employees, including six New Haven residents.
Through the City of New Haven’s Façade Improvement Grant Program, Libby’s received a $41,951 grant to help completely refurbish its façade, including a new storefront entrance (door and windows), refurbished signage, and the reconstruction of the upper patio. The grant program supports façade improvements to commercial and mixed-used properties that benefit the business as well as the community at large -- and the grants are used as a tool to help stimulate economic growth, strengthen community redevelopment and rehabilitation, and fight neighborhood blight. Grant funds for eligible businesses and properties can be used for façade improvements such as doors, signage, lighting, landscaping, security items, among other things.
The event will include celebratory remarks, the presentation of a mayoral proclamation, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a tour of the newly renovated business.
