MALLOY URGES LEGISLATURE TO OVERRIDE GOV. RELL’S LATEST VETO
HARTFORD - Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, who is exploring a run for Governor, today urged the Legislature to override Gov. Rell’s veto of legislation that would have prevented her from cutting almost $8 million in funding for the state’s judicial system.
According to the state’s Chief Court Administrator, these cuts could lead to the closing of three courthouses, reduced services for victims of domestic violence, reduced services for children involved in abuse and neglect cases, and elimination of some legal
services for the poor.
“Gov. Rell’s veto of this legislation is a stunning example of misplaced priorities and mismanagement of state government,” said Malloy. “What does it say about the kind of government we have that we would expose people who’ve suffered from abuse and
neglect to more abuse and neglect? Every time you think the Governor has reached the end of the line in terms of making bad public policy decisions it turns out she hasn’t. She comes back from vacation, and this is the first thing she does?”
“Since this budget crisis began the Governor has engaged in a systematic effort to decimate services for the most vulnerable people in our state: people with disabilities, people who are sick, people who are poor, and now, people who are exposed to domestic
violence, abuse, and neglect. And she justifies these actions by saying these are tough fiscal times. Well, I don’t care how tough times are -- there is absolutely no justification for these actions.”
Said Malloy, “If the Governor had spent the spring and summer looking for less damaging cuts instead of engaging in a political dance about taxes we would not be having these discussions today. Instead, we are.”
“If the tone of these comments seems harsh, it’s because I’m appalled. We should all be appalled. We live in one of the wealthiest states in the nation, and day after day we are walking away from the people who need our help the most because there isn’t
the political will to make better, less hurtful decisions.
I have said this before, and I’ll say it again: we need new leadership in this state, and we need it yesterday.
I urge the Legislature to show the leadership Gov. Rell will not and override this veto.”
