MEDIA ADVISORY
Sept. 15th Press Conference: Homeless Shelter Top Donors Fuel Abuse
Dare to Struggle will be hosting a press conference exposing top donors of the Friendship Service Center for turning a blind eye to the shelter’s mistreatment and abuse.
WHAT: Press conference and rally outside of donor Thomaston Savings Bank’s New Britain branch. Speakers will detail our recent campaign in which we pressured top donors to reflect our demands of the Friendship Service Center, expose the donors’ inaction, and expose the shelter’s mistreatment.
WHEN: Monday, September 15th, 4:00 PM EST
WHERE: Thomaston Savings Bank, 233 Main St., New Britain, CT, 06051
WHO: Featured speakers will include members of Dare to Struggle, members of the Homeless Liberation Initiative, and current and former clients of the Friendship Service Center.
WHY: The Friendship Service Center (FSC) shelter in New Britain is grossly mismanaged, mistreating its clients while the executives make 6-figure salaries. We've been hearing about this from people inside for years, and have been documenting it in our Oppression on the Streets newsletters and other exposure pieces. Most recently their discriminatory policies left a disabled woman out on the streets, and they still haven't addressed long-time issues like their poor case management, serving rotten food, staff stealing donations, etc.. Their executive team constantly ignores us whether we email or come to their doorstep, yet they nonetheless have the time and energy to unleash a war of repression on residents and clients, threatening to kick out anyone who speaks up and going after a local activist's job. Since all the FSC executives seem to care about is their salaries and public image, we pumped up the pressure by engaging their donors. We asked the donors to echo our demands and request a report from the FSC on how exactly they plan to implement changes in line with our demands. We initially gave them a deadline of August 9th to get back to us and we promised to publish a report on what actions the top donors took. The donors have chosen to either stay silent or double down.

More Information:
Dare to Struggle is a multinational organization open to anyone who wants to resist and stop injustice no matter who holds political office. We don’t lobby politicians. We don’t use insular activist lingo. We don’t chase social media fame. We don’t seek careers or corporate sponsorship through activism. We’re committed to standing with the people subjected to the horrors of the American nightmare. We go to the neighborhoods facing police brutality, ICE raids, poverty, and evictions, talk to people about the problems they face, and organize people in collective struggle. We know that radical change only happens when people step outside of routine protest or expecting politicians to do it for us and take bold, collective action.
