HARTFORD HONORS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

---NEWS AND COMMUNITY STATEMENT---

(February 1, 2011) --- The City of Hartford is proud to honor the month of February as Black History Month.  Mayor Pedro E. Segarra issued this statement in recognition of the celebration:

“As Hartford celebrates its 375th Anniversary, let’s pause to recognize all the great contributions that Black-Americans have made and continue to make that inspire all of us to achieve our very best.  Hartford is proud of its history, diversity, and culture.  This can be experienced through our arts and heritage community, our shops and our restaurants.  Let us not forget pioneers like Thirman Milner, the first black Mayor of Hartford and of New England; and Carrie Saxon Perry, the first black woman to be Mayor of any major U.S. city.  I invite you to learn more about trailblazers like these; explore Hartford’s unique role in history, and experience the energy and vibrancy that we carry into our future,” said Mayor Segarra.

Hartford will recognize its homegrown talent this Friday, February 4th at 5 p.m. the Mayor will join host and City Council President rJo Winch, as he attends the 7th Annual ‘Honoring Our Own’ celebration at the City Hall Atrium.  Be an eyewitness to history as you read the biographies and meet some of the Hartford residents who were the firsts in their fields.  To RSVP, please contact Petrel Maylor at (860) 757-9570.
