WATERBURY DELEGATION CHEERS BOND FUNDING
FOR GREATER WATERBURY YMCA
$1.3 million earmarked to update HVAC and control system
WATERBURY — Members of the Waterbury Democratic delegation in the Connecticut General Assembly applauded Tuesday's approval of $1.3 million in funding for the Greater Waterbury YMCA by the State Bond Commission.
This funding allows the Greater Waterbury YMCA to update its HVAC and control system.
“The approval of $1.3 million in funding for the Greater Waterbury YMCA today is great news,” said State Representative Michael DiGiovancarlo, who represents Waterbury's 74th District. “The Waterbury delegation would like to thank Governor Ned Lamont, Speaker Matt Ritter, House Majority Leader Jason Rojas for recognizing the need for this grant and the importance of healthy living in the City of Waterbury.”
“For more than 163 years the Greater Waterbury YMCA has supported the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” DiGiovancarlo continued. “It currently serves more than 700 children on a daily basis through its School Readiness and before- and after-school programs. With more than 10,000 members and 20,000 people served, the Greater Waterbury YMCA is an enduring and vital part of the Waterbury community.”
Governor Lamont said, “I am glad the state can partner with the Greater Waterbury YMCA on the funding needed to complete these much-needed renovations to their building. The YMCA provides so many services for youths who live in Waterbury, and through this partnership we can help this organization maintain a place for its services to continue.”
“This funding is tremendous news for not only the Greater Waterbury YMCA, but for the families in need that the YMCA serves throughout Waterbury, especially children through before- and after-school programs and School Readiness,” said State Representative Geraldo Reyes, who represents Waterbury's 75th District. “I appreciate the support of Governor Lamont, Speaker Matt Ritter, House Majority Leader Jason Rojas in bolstering and investing in a city institution that has delivered for our community for more than 160 years.”
Added State Senator Joan Hartley, whose 15th State Senate District includes Waterbury, where she lives: “For decades, the Greater Waterbury YMCA has been a hub for families and children to participate in activities that enhance their long-term well-being. I join with the Waterbury delegation and community members in welcoming this new funding for improvements to the YMCA’s facility. Thank you also to Governor Lamont and the State Bond Commission for approving this funding request. The YMCA’s programs have taken on even greater importance because of the coronavirus pandemic’s effects on young people’s mental health. Their youth programs provide a needed outlet for children to have fun and interact with their fellow students, while in a safe environment.”
State Representative Ron Napoli, who represents Waterbury's 73rd District, said: "We were thrilled with the State Bonding Commission's decision to grant $1.3 million to the Greater Waterbury YMCA, which has demonstrated its effort to strengthen our community by empowering sportsmanship in young people, providing equitable wellness opportunities and inspiring high-level activity for people of all ages. Its five core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility foster a level of civility for its members. I would like to thank my colleagues in the Waterbury delegation as well as Governor Lamont, Speaker Matt Ritter, House Majority Leader Jason Rojas for recognizing the importance of health and wellness in the City of Waterbury."
