ICYMI: GOP Fails to Produce Budget Proposal for Third Year in a Row

HARTFORD – On Friday, CT Mirror reported that Republicans in the State Senate, including State Sen. Ryan Fazio, have failed to produce a budget yet again and revenue proposal for the upcoming year. Despite telling Connecticut residents to expect a detailed budget proposal from his caucus less than a month ago, Minority Leader Stephen Harding is now revealing that his party has no intention to fulfill that commitment.

With the legislative session coming to an end in just 9 days, this lack of contribution to the budgeting process underscores the internal divisions within the Republican party and the misplaced priorities of GOP leaders more occupied with feeding red meat to the base than actually contributing to the budgeting process on behalf of their constituents.

Some highlights from the full article:

  • “Minority Leader Stephen Harding, R-Brookfield, who had told the Connecticut Mirror on April 1 that he expected his caucus would release a detailed budget proposal, said this week Senate Republicans have decided against that. But he didn’t rule out the possibility his caucus may offer amendments to reshape the next state budget when a final plan is debated in the coming days on the Senate floor.”

  • “The Senate Democratic leaders also noted that, based on state analysts’ revenue projections, the GOP plan would eliminate nearly all surplus funds in future years, potentially pushing state finances in deficit.”

  • “‘With the clock ticking down on this legislative session, there is still nothing on paper,’ Looney and Duff wrote. ‘The public, the media and legislators have no bill number, no fiscal analysis and no public hearing. Just more campaign talking points and empty promises.’”

Even worse, the Senate GOP’s idea for relief is riddled with gimmicks. The Republican plan repeats past mistakes by using volatile revenue for ongoing costs, a dangerous gamble that risks budget shortfalls, painful cuts, and higher taxes when the economy turns.

This matches the GOP’s gubernatorial candidates, who continue to promise wildly expensive policies that would devastate Connecticut’s budget. Meanwhile, the economic stewardship of Governor Lamont and Democratic lawmakers built the fiscal strength that has enabled the state to step up where the federal government has failed and expand support for Connecticut families.

Statement from CT Dems spokesperson Ian Clarke:

“Whether we’re talking about Republican lawmakers in Hartford or the gubernatorial candidates slinging hard-right policy proposals on the campaign trail, the CT GOP is either unwilling or uninterested in realistic policy proposals that will actually help Connecticut families. They make lots of big promises that evaporate as soon as it’s time to do basic math and put them on paper. Buyer beware.”
