ICYMI: France Finally Clarifies Support for National Abortion Ban

NORWICH, CT – Yesterday morning on WFSB’s CT’22, Mike France—who is currently seeking to represent Connecticut’s second district in the U.S. Congress—confirmed that he would vote in Washington D.C. to override Connecticut's 32-year-old law that today protects the health care decisions of women and their doctors.

After initially dodging the question of how he would vote on recent Republican legislation in Congress to establish a nationwide ban on abortion access when pressed by host Eric Parker, Mike France stated “I would vote yes.”

"I would vote yes.” — Mike France, when asked if he would support nationwide restrictions on access to abortion. Click here to watch.

Mike France’s comments this weekend finally clarify his position on a woman’s right to choose if elected to Congress:

  • On the same day that the Supreme Court upended 50 years of federal protections for women’s health care by overturning Roe v Wade, France appeared on the steps of the State Capitol in Hartford - alongside Peter Wolfgang of the Family Institute of Connecticut, a leading anti-abortion group in the state - to proclaim it “a great day.”

  • Mike France repeatedly dodged questions about his position on a national abortion ban after the repeal of Roe v Wade, claiming that it was not a federal issue and that it is now with the state legislatures to make that decision.”

  • Just last week, France claimed that concerns about potential restrictions on abortion were “fearmongering,” but refused to take a position himself about recently-introduced proposals in Congres to implement a nationwide ban that would overwrite Connecticut’s laws guaranteeing access and privacy in making reproductive choices.

  • Last Friday, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, who came to Connecticut over the summer to raise funds for France, unveiled the Republican “Commitment to America” that laid out the republican mid-term election agenda - including legislation to implement nationwide restrictions on abortion.

  • Now, after initially dodging the question of how he would vote on recent Republican proposals in Congress to establish a nationwide ban on abortion access, Mike France stated “I would vote yes.”
