NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Central Connecticut State University is inviting the public to help shape a work of art.

A life-sized interactive sculpture by artist Tom Zaccheo (photo attached), installed at the entrance to Maloney Hall in New Britain, asks visitors to respond to a single question: “What will become of me?” Members of the campus community and visitors are encouraged to record their reflections in a notebook inside the Maloney Hall lobby or scan a QR code to offer their thoughts online.

Constructed from approximately 250 pounds of unfired clay over a steel armature, the sculpture intentionally avoids specific anatomical features. Rather than representing a particular individual, the work is meant to evoke humanity broadly across identities, experiences, and perspectives.

In a statement about the work, Zaccheo said, “This figure is not meant to represent a specific body or identity. It represents all of us. Made from unfired clay, the sculpture will gradually change and deteriorate. That impermanence is central to the work. By inviting viewers to write their responses, the piece becomes collaborative—existing not only as an object, but as a record of shared reflection.”

The sculpture’s evolving physical form will be documented through time-sequenced photography and considered alongside the written reflections contributed by viewers.

Participation is voluntary and open-ended, allowing individuals to engage with the installation in their own way.

The installation engages principles of ephemeral and interactive art, emphasizing impermanence, participation, and shared meaning rather than permanence or fixed interpretation,” according to Zaccheo.

Free parking is available in Welte Garage, adjacent to the art building, and at the Student Center Parking Lot.
