Statement from State Representative Tom O’Dea on Supreme Court Title IX Ruling
Today, the United States Supreme Court issued a significant ruling affirming the original intent of Title IX, reinforcing protections designed to ensure fairness and safety in women’s athletics.
As the father of a female college athlete, I have for years advocated for policies that preserve equal opportunities for female athletes. I have seen firsthand the fairness and safety issue that we have put our young woman athletes through. This decision represents an important step toward maintaining a level playing field and safeguarding the integrity of women’s sports.
Title IX was enacted to expand opportunities for women and girls, and its core purpose remains as vital today as when it was first passed. Ensuring that athletic competition is fair and safe is essential to protecting those opportunities.
As policymakers, our responsibility is to support environments where all athletes can compete with confidence in both fairness and safety. I remain committed to working with colleagues, educators, and athletic organizations to uphold these principles and to ensure that Connecticut continues to provide strong protections for women and girls in sports.
