STATEMENT FROM JILLIAN GILCHREST ON RETIREMENT OF NANCY PELOSI
West Hartford, CT — Jillian Gilchrest, a state representative from West Hartford and Democratic candidate for Congress in Connecticut’s 1st District, released the following statement on the retirement of Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:
"Nancy Pelosi exemplified leadership for a generation of women, showing that it was possible to lead and bring change in a world traditionally — and still — dominated by men. She made history as the first woman to serve as Speaker, and wielded that power to pass the Affordable Care Act, protect the environment, advance equal rights, and help the nation recover from the Great Recession and the pandemic.
"She demonstrated that it’s not just about who holds the gavel, but what they do with it.
"Her decision to step aside now is in keeping with her unique understanding of the nation’s politics, and her ability to play the long game. As foundational elements of our country fall, a sustained reform movement must rise in its place that can build a better version of America. That is a long-term project that will require new leaders, with new ideas. I have great respect for her recognition of that, and for putting the country first.
"I’m deeply grateful for her leadership, her example, and her mentorship of women across the country."
