WOMEN’S MARCH AND PROTEST IN BRIDGEPORT TO DEMAND JUSTICE FOR BLACK WOMEN AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM MAYOR GANIM AND OFFICIALS FOR UPHOLDING RACISM AND CORRUPTION IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In response to ongoing misconduct and mismanagement in the Bridgeport Police Department – most recently evidenced by the mishandling of the deaths of Lauren Smith-Fields and Brenda Lee Rawls – Connecticut women and a growing coalition of women’s rights, civil rights, and civic organizations will hold a march and protest today – Saturday, February 19th at 1:00pm – beginning at Bridgeport City Hall (45 Lyon Terrace) and ending at the Margaret E. Morton Government Center (999 Broad Street).
At the march – “Black Women Speak! A March for Truth & Justice” – women (and their allies) will come together to center Black women’s voices, demand their humanity be recognized, and insist upon accountability from Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim and other officials for their silence and complicity in upholding racism and corruption in the Bridgeport Police Department. Speakers will include Black elected women and leaders from Bridgeport and across the state.
