COMING UP: Courtney Visits Groton Manufacturer Hillery Co., and Madison Cinemas for Update on How Relief Funding Has Helped Them Re-Open

Today at 10:30am ET, Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) will be in Groton to meet with leadership at Hillery Company, a custom metal fabrication manufacturer founded in 1952.

A Certified Women Owned Small Business that performs a wide range of work from design, welding, waterjet cutting, custom lamination, staging and more, Hillery Company is also part of the local network of defense supply chain manufacturers, particularly in support of eastern Connecticut submarine construction. With the wave of shipbuilding and job opportunities being directed home from Rep. Courtney and the House Seapower Subcommittee on behalf of the U.S. Navy, Hillery Company has reported seeing large increases in work orders in recent months.

Courtney will meet with Hillery Company’s Vice President Joe de la Cruz to discuss their work in support of U.S. Navy submarine construction, how the 2022 NDAA has helped keep their uptick in activity going strong, and efforts in Congress and at home to expand eastern CT’s already-successful workforce training programs—like EWIB’s Manufacturing Pipeline.

Press are invited to join for an update and tour of Hillery Company.

Final Stop: Visit to Madison Cinemas Following Grand Re-Opening

At 1:00pm ET this afternoon, Courtney will visit Madison Cinemas to meet with owner Harold Blank following the theater’s Grand Re-Opening on February 10th.

Forced to close in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Madison Cinemas worked with Rep. Courtney’s office to apply for relief funding through the federal Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program. The SVOG program was established by Congress in late 2020 by H.R. 133 and was reinforced by the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021. The program is meant to help America’s live venues get back on their feet in several ways, from assistance with payroll costs, to rent and utility payments, worker protection expenditures, maintenance and administrative costs, and many other ordinary and necessary business expenses. Madison Art Cinemas received an SVOG award of $276,298.

Today’s discussion will focus on how the theater has utilized federal relief funding to re-open safely and prepare for the future with improved technology, updated facilities, a new air filtration system, and more.
