MEDIA ADVISORY – Sept. 30, 2025
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Center, Mosaic Center, and Global Engagement at Central will partner for their third annual Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month celebration, with this year’s theme highlighting Brazilian culture. Follow the sounds of samba to the upcoming “Flavors and Sounds of Brazil” and Study Abroad Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from noon to 3 p.m. outdoors at the Student Center Circle.
While Brazilians are not considered Hispanic, they are Latino—Brazil being the largest country in Latin America, with Portuguese as its official language. Connecticut is home to a large and growing Brazilian community, reflected in the number of Brazilian students at Central and rising interest in Brazilian culture and history.
This vibrant celebration will feature study abroad booths, where students can meet faculty leading trips this academic year. The event will kick off with a Capoeira workshop and performance from Benção Capoeira of West Hartford from noon to 1 p.m. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and music. From 1 to 2 p.m., Brazilian instructor Thelma Ladeira from Arts for Learning Connecticut will lead a samba dance workshop.
Music will be provided throughout the day by a WFCS student DJ, and local food trucks will offer Brazilian cuisine with a ticket voucher.
The event is free and open to the entire campus community. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors to Alumni Hall at the Student Center.
